Dean’s getting rather sick of Castiel’s reluctance to join in on the fight, but it’s telling when he says that he doesn’t want to get violent again because the last time he did he was incredibly destructive. But it turns out that they need him because, as Crowley alluded and Meg pointed out, Castiel is the only one who can recognize the real Dick. Even after witnessing Bobby’s death, Castiel still doesn’t want to join the fight, so Dean asks him for a favor instead: take him to the Impala. There, Dean gives Cas a little pep talk and the angel has a change of heart. He wants to know the plan.
The plan is they’re going in with guns blazing.
Baby is Back
The Impala is back! It’s been a long time since we saw that sweet car, but it’s making its re-entrance to the tune of “Born to Be Wild” and it’s ready to take on Sucrocorp. Or, at least, Sucrocorp’s sign. Here’s the twist, though: the Winchesters aren’t in the car. Meg is. And she’s taking the heat off the boys as they sneak in the back way.
While she fights off the Leviathans, Sam manages to find Kevin, who tells him they need to blow up the lab before Dick’s poison can be shipped. Meanwhile, Castiel and Dean manage to corner the real Dick in the same lab. There’s a bit of a fake-out with a substitute bone that doesn’t actually kill Dick, but then Dean stabs him through the neck with the real righteous bone and, just after Sam and Kevin arrive, Dick explodes in a spectacular splash of black goo.
On Your Own
When the goo clears, only Sam and Kevin are left in the lab. That’s when Crowley drops by with some news. The good news? He’s happy they defeated Dick and he’s got an army of demons rounding up some Leviathans. With Dick gone, they’ll be very disorganized. The bad news? Not only is he taking Kevin away, but Sam is all on his own and he needs to figure out a way to stop the Leviathans from re-building and figure out where his brother went.
Well, his brother is in Purgatory, along with Castiel, because they were pulled there when Dick’s dead “soul” was. Castiel explains where they are when Dean finally wakes up, but they’re soon surrounding by terrible monsters with glowing red eyes. Castiel warns that they need to get out of there before they’re ripped to shreds.
Moments later, Castiel disappears. Dean is left alone, surrounded by those monsters. In Purgatory.
Well. Sucks to be Dean right now.
Supernatural, You Are So Cruel
See what I mean about the crazy cliffhanger? In some respects, this is as bad as Dean going to Hell. At least he was prepared for that, and Sam was trying to figure out a way to save him. This time Sam really doesn’t have any options. How do you get Dean out of Purgatory from the outside? Do you open a portal? That will run the risk of monsters escaping, just like when the Leviathans escaped. And how does Dean fight these terrible monsters without his angel helper? If he gets out, will he be some sort of crazy hunter-man? This presents many opportunities for season 8, because I have no idea how it will turn out. How long will Dean remain in Purgatory before he gets out? Surely he’ll get out at some point, but what the experience does to him will be important, I hope.
I have so many thoughts about this finale, but they’re all tied in with the season in general. At the mid-season point, I organized a big review with several popular bloggers in the fandom. On Monday, I intend to post a season-long review with these same bloggers to discuss the season as a whole. We’ll talk about the Leviathans, our hopes for next season, the deaths, Sam’s Hellucinations and Dean’s storyline. It will be a no-holds barred look at everything season 7 of Supernatural.
Updated: Read the massive multi-author review of season 7.
I will, however, say that I enjoyed this finale. I rather like Dick. He’s always been fun, if a little too corporate. But it’s the last few moments that really cinched the deal for me. This is one of the mother of all cliffhangers and I think the repercussions will be far-reaching. With a move to Wednesday nights planned for the 2012-2013 season and a new showrunner taking over behind the scenes, I feel like Supernatural is about to be reinvigorated.
Do you feel it too?
Stay tuned for that review on Monday. Until then, check out our last Supernatural slide-show for the season: Most Memorable Action Scenes.
With the season done, it may be a little while before news about season 8 starts popping up. We’ll be at Comic-Con again this year, hunting down as many spoilers as we can. Until then, make sure to bookmark and check our Supernatural page, which will always be updated as new information, trailers and photos trickle in.

Nice review, thank you. I loved the finale. Sobbed when the sad music started for Bobby’s leaving scene. Cheered like a nut through Baby’s crazy drive..although how weird we didn’t get to see Dean with her for even one second. And he LET A DEMON DRIVE BABY!! If someone had told me that I would have laughed at them. I think Bobby is in purgatory as well, I thought he’d end up there since Death’s Door. And Cas is back, properly! His voice, his attitude in purgatory, all of it was old Cas. He’s popped out to survey and will come back first thing, I’m sure of it. Which is kinda sad, how are the writers going to stop using angels as a get out of jail free card? I’m so looking forward to S8. Now that they’re in purgatory, the writers could use it to bring back just about any single character they want!
