Storage Wars has been an entertaining and highly amusing show now for years. It’s featured some truly controversial episodes and run through an entire gamut of emotions that the audience has gotten to see their favorite stars go through from time to time. Yet for all that we have to remember that it’s just a show. Whatever goes on with this series is highly suspect when it comes to “reality”. It might make us laugh and even pump our fist in triumph when our favorite characters get one up on the supposed villain (cough, Hester, cough) but really and truly it’s a scripted show first and foremost that’s meant to get ratings and little more.
So let’s let those metaphorical cats out of the bag shall we?
How in the world do they get those lockers?
Just so we’re clear, if you happen to take another persons property while it’s still technically theirs that’s called thievery. The trick with Storage Wars is that they try to convince us that everything is on the up and up by only auctioning off lockers that are “abandoned” or otherwise delinquent in payment. So while the person can’t pay their stuff is obviously inaccessible since the site will change the lock and keep the stuff inside. That’s a lot like kicking someone when they’re down to be honest. Worse still, the person might pass away and if their family doesn’t recall that they have a locker, or they have no family to speak of, then it’s a general free for all. Any way you cut it, the acquisition of lockers for this show is as cutthroat as the supposed competition.
You might not know your favorite characters as well as you think.
As much as you might think you know the cast from their funny quips and one-liners you might need to back it up just a bit. They’re given scripts to read, and so that person you think is funny and engaging could be a complete and utter fraud. Those nice folks could be the worst people you’ve ever met, and the villains might be the nice guys, or they could be even worse.
A lot of stuff is planted in lockers.
You know those moments during which the actors exclaim over what they’ve found? Quite a few of those “aha” moments are scripted. This is almost like a giant Easter egg hunt for adults at times. Such obvious plants would explain why what would seem like an average locker is hiding away something that is worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. So the next time you see one of these actors get all goosey and excited keep in mind that the show does plant quite a few things in the lockers. Just saying.
A lot of people have been taken in by this show over the years because they don’t understand the real risk of a storage auction, but even those that have known better have chosen to close their eyes to the truth. The reality of storage auctions is that they are not typically the big money affairs you see on this show and are not meant to support one’s way of life. In truth they’re a risky way to earn a little more money, and not at all a solid investment.
