The 16-Bit version of Luke Skywalker vs. Kylo Ren was still impressive despite being done in the manner of a video game, and still managed to capture the feel of the movie despite the lack of enough detail to really see everything as it went down. At this point I’m standing my ground against the naysayers as a Star Wars fan and a lover of the overall story. I still don’t forgive Disney for what they did to the franchise and for relegating the books to a legends canon, but this fight was something that could have easily redeemed a lot of their ill decisions. The way it was played out feels like a giant tease but really it seems more like the buildup that was need to lead into the next movie.
Kylo Ren vs. Luke Skywalker could have been an epic battle, but it could have also been something that took too much away from the building tension between Ren and Rey that has yet to come. In another couple of years we’ll have what could be the final fight between the two most powerful Force users left in the galaxy, that we know of, and pitting Luke against Ren in an actual fight could have been a huge mistake. The way it was done though was far better for the reason that it was Luke’s final act to save the Rebellion, but not in the way that people would have thought might happen. Instead of going toe to toe with Ren he suckered his former student in and allowed him to think that he was foolish enough to offer up and easy target. He allowed Ren and the rest of the First Order to think that just for a moment, he was untouchable.
When it became obvious that Ren was expending too much of their power upon a single opponent General Hux tried to rein his leader in, only to be pimp-slapped by the Force as Ren hurled him into the nearest bulkhead without even touching him. This is the madness of Ren, that he does not heed wise council and blunders forward into what could be obvious danger without any thought as to what might happen next. That has to be a part of why Luke did what he did, because he knew he’d be able to goad Ren long enough to allow the others time to escape. Luke might have been a lot older and less inclined to be the hero he’d once been, but in the end he finally took his place among the Force and humiliated his former student in the process.
Those that thought that the wait wasn’t worth what they got in this film are the same people that would have, or did, denounce The Empire Strikes Back for its many plot holes and unanswered questions. This encounter with Kylo Ren and Luke answered a few questions but apparently it raised many more for those that can’t accept that this is how the story went. Luke became the hero yet again, and did the things that heroes do best.
He sacrificed everything in order to save the idea that was the Rebellion.
