Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin has passed away. The 27-year-old was killed in an auto accident early Sunday morning in Los Angeles. Yelchin’s publicist Jennifer Allen release the news of his death hours ago: “Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning. His family requests you respect their privacy at this time.”
Sources have indicated that Yelchin was pinned by his own car as he was leaving his home in Studio City California. He was on his way to rehearsal. Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Jenny Houser announced, “A fatal traffic accident occurred. It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backward down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence.” It appeared that Yelchin had exited his car and this is how the freak accident occurred.
Yelchin is best known for playing Chekov in the three Star Trek film reboots. The third installment Star Trek Beyond is set to hit theaters on July 22nd. Yelchin had completed all his work on the film, which is currently in the final editing phase. The actor recently finished filming Thoroughbred, a psychological thriller that is set to be released in 2017, just a few weeks before he died.
Anton Yelchin had been recently attached to the TV series Mr. Mercedes, which is based on the Stephen King novel. The limited run show would air on AT&T’s Audience Network. There has been no update on who will be replacing Yelchin in the project at this time.
Anton Yelchin’s other notable roles include voicing Clumsy Smurf in the Smurfs movie franchise, Charley Brewster in Fright Night, Kyle Reese in Termination Salvation, and Zack Mazursky in Alpha Dog. His television appearances include guest appearance on ER, The Practice, Without a Trace, NYPD Blue, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
