Star Trek 4 is Back On: Here are Some Details

Well the good news is that Star Trek fans can stop hoping for another movie and start anticipating it since Star Trek 4 is back on when it comes to being pushed towards production, but as of yet nothing has really been finalized and the main actors haven’t even managed to make their way back to the signing table just yet. But the good news is that it sounds as though they will be coming back to take over their roles and bring another round of discovery and possible adventure to the series since people have absolutely loved the reboot thus far, apart from the last one, Beyond, that was kind of silly to be honest. I mean come on, this scene alone:

First off, who in the world would ever think of calling Beastie Boys ‘classical’ music, and second, who in their stoned mind would ever, EVER think of creating a scenario where a song like Sabotage would lead to the destruction of an alien force that had already proved its superiority in numbers? Honestly it was an amusing scene and one that likely had some people pumping their fists in fond remembrance of the Beastie Boys, but it’s still comical enough to think that it actually made it in. Star Trek has been redone in a big way and so far a lot of people have had reason to enjoy it without much reservation except for Beyond, but the fourth installment, if one could think that the movies are being rebooted in order, which is hard to imagine at this point, would mean that time travel would have been up next.

That idea does seem to be off the table, or at least the prospect of Kirk meeting his father is off the table since it seems as though talks concerning this were tabled in 2018. But the idea that it could still happen in some way along the lines of the original fourth movie would be interesting. At this time there are no details of the plot, but if you think back to the Shatner and Nimoy era then you realize that they had to go back in time to obtain two humpback whales that were the only way of communicating with an alien probe that was tearing the earth apart with its sonic frequencies. The crew of the Enterprise, using a Klingon ship at that point, had to find a way to retrofit the inside of the ship to hold not just the whales, but the water they needed to reside in as well, which was a considerable amount of weight, not to mention that traveling fast enough to go forward in time would have been a tremendous strain. Of course if this isn’t the story that’s being pushed then there’s no idea what to expect since the reboot kind of wiped everything clean in order for a relatively new story to begin. There are some instances in which we’ve seen glimmers of the original story or full-blown images and situations that are taken directly from the older movies and shows. But thinking that everything is going to be the same is a big mistake that a lot of people have stopped making thus far.

The only crew member that won’t be making it and would be expected if not for his passing in 2016 is Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov. J.J. Abrams, the director taking on the movie, made it clear that the character will not be showing up in this movie as he didn’t want to replace Yelchin, which a lot of fans might appreciate. Apart from that however there’s not much else to say since the whole idea that the fourth movie is in fact coming up but doesn’t have a lot of info to give just yet is about all anyone can tell. Obviously there are going to be a few changes here and there and the understanding of the crew and how they’ve developed over the years is going to be a big factor. But time travel is hopefully still on the table even if it can’t be worked out with everyone, and it’s a hope that the story will be somewhat recognizable since the future does have a way of happening no matter what comes along, right? After all despite the change to his past, Kirk still managed to become the cocky and headstrong individual he’s been known as for so long, and his life has been quite a bit different, but some things just don’t change that easily. Maybe we’ll see Kirk and the beginning of his hatred for Klingons, who knows.

What is known at this point is that Star Trek fans will have yet another reason to head to the rumor mill now and again to get more information as it continues to come.
