I guess I’m a little confused, but kind of intrigued. Sonic is going to be teaming up with Hooters for a promotional deal? If you have a dirty mind, like me, then you might have already come up with a few quips that I really can’t use here but find kind of amusing. A few of them of course involve being a little too speedy.
Anyway, there’s not a lot on the table at the moment save for the fact that Sonic is one of the only characters still prominent enough in Japan to really gain a lot of attention and resist the plethora of changes that many other characters have undergone throughout the years. At this point he’s kind of confined to two very distinctive looks, that from the original Sega Genesis, and that of the Sega Dreamcast. You do remember the Dreamcast right? It lasted for a little while before crapping out and had a few decent games that didn’t really go anywhere except of course for Sonic and another game known as SoulCalibur.
To be honest I don’t get the tie-in with Hooters since Sonic and the popular chain don’t have a lot in common and there’s not a lot of correlation between the two. I hate to sound like I’m speaking about a stereotype but there are a lot of times it seems that the Japanese are just downright confusing with the kind of things they want to put together in the same venue. Their sense of what goes together is definitely not what a lot of us here in the states would see as a usual pairing. If it works for them though then so be it, let the hedgehog partner with Hooters in order to do, something.
Sonic has been a beloved video game character for a long time now and his popularity has kind of risen and fallen throughout the years. When he was still a Sega Genesis character where he originated he was one of the most awesome characters ever conceived. Then he was bought up by Nintendo and had to compete with Mario for a while until he finally got his footing once again. Even then it wasn’t quite the same and the blue speedster continued to take a back seat to a lot of other personalities. But it seems like lately he’s been making a comeback that’s inspiring to see.
But Hooters?
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around this idea and so far coming up with very little reason why it would ever work. The only real reason I can think of at this point is the promotion of a new Sonic game, cartoon, or resurgence of Sonic in the gaming world somehow, or something equally as under the radar at the moment. It’s a well known fact that people love Sonic the Hedgehog and people, guys mostly, like Hooters. But the number of people that like them both are kind of rare. So what gives?
So far there are no answers, just a lot of questions.
