The mission to save the world is underway in this week’s episode of Sleepy Hollow as Ichabod and Abbie head to Delaware to make the journey to the Catacombs. I would’ve loved to hear Abbie finish singing the anthem before the path toward the Catacombs was revealed, but beggars can’t be choosers. The close call that Ichabod had while driving on the highway almost freaked me out. Good thing Ichabod snapped out of his daydream in time to swerve out of the way of the incoming car. A lesson in Driving 101, Ichabod Crane: always keep your eyes and mind focused on the road.
Meanwhile, Jenny, Joe, Agents Foster and Reynolds work with Pandora to stall her husband from reaching omnipotence. Their plan to use the power of the ley lines on Bear Mountain was a good one until the Hidden One melted every single one of the metal rods with one wave of his hand and made the barrier disappear. I really wanted Jenny to take the shot and destroy the hourglass, but the Hidden One managed to stop her before she could pull the trigger. So close!
The part where Ichabod and Abbie made it to the Catacombs and found that encrypted note from Betsy Ross, I was curious to find out what it had said, but the answer was never revealed in the rest of the episode. Though from the looks of it, I guess that it was some sort of guide to lead Ichabod and Abbie to the temple. It was also intriguing to find out that the Betsy Ross that returned from the Delaware trip wasn’t the real Betsy. I want to say that it was a Betsy Ross doppelganger but we’re not dealing with multiple universes here like it’s The Flash.
Speaking of Betsy Ross, I was surprised to find the flag lady alive and well in the secret chamber in the temple. Looks like she didn’t make it out of the Catacombs after all and was trapped just like Abbie was. Only thing is, the woman still thinks that it’s 1777 (not 2016 like the rest of us do) and I detect a hint of resentment toward Abbie when Betsy looked at her with a glaring look. This had better not turn into a catfight between Betsy and Abbie.
Another thing I found intriguing (or shocking, rather) is that Papa Mills knows quite a lot about all the supernatural stuff that Abbie and Jenny have been dealing with when the man confessed to Jenny that he was in Iraq with August Corbin and Atticus Nevins. Wonder what other mysterious secrets that Papa Mill’s keeping from his daughters? It was equally shocking to see Pandora help the team fight against her husband and not end up double crossing them as I had predicted. Perhaps there is good in her after all aside from that whole take over the world vibe that she had been giving off ever since she was first introduced on the show.
Bringing things back to the mission, it was a shame the enchantment to turn Joe back into a human didn’t work and Jenny had to shoot him with the prototype gun and killed him. Poor Joe. Thought he had gotten the Wendigo out of his system for good only to have it return with a vengeance thanks to the Hidden One who turned Jenny’s love for him into pain. With Joe dead, it spells departure for Zach Appelman, the actor who brought Joe to life. Goodbye, Zach, you will be missed!
There were also a couple of things that I felt was a bit off, so to speak, in this episode. First, why didn’t Ichabod and Abbie start regenerating Pandora’s Box when they were in the secret chamber like they planned to do? They could’ve started after Betsy awoke from her long slumber. Are the writers saving it for the finale? If so, it better be good because there wasn’t any regenerating being done in this episode. The second thing was that Papa Mills said that he had to leave to protect Jenny and Abbie. From what? More supernatural beings?
Overall, this was an okay episode, but not good enough, in my opinion, to lead up to the season finale. Though seeing Ichabod make a decent cup of cappuccino complete with foam art was pretty awesome. That and seeing him savour the donut that Abbie got him.
