While it may not be the revealing secret to the recipe of Coca Cola, have you ever stopped to think about how Soy Sauce is made? Chance are very likely that you haven’t. You merely dip your sushi in it, use it for awesome marinades, put it in rice, and do whatever else you want with one of the most popular condiments in the world. But little do you ever think about the fact that for 750 years almost no one on the planet knew how this little miracle is made…..until now.
In this informative and interesting five minute short film by Mile Nagaoka, you can see how Japanese soy sauce has been made for 750 years. Thanks to National Geographic for posting this to their Youtube page over the weekend. FYI the origin of Soy Sauce is Yuasa Town and still where its made. Also, what’s incredibly fascinating about this video is the fact that the method has been unchanged this entire time. Very little if any automation and it looks more like a timeless art than it does a mechanical production process.
