NBC’s Late Night host Seth Meyers is nearing on a deal to host the Golden Globe Awards telecast this January 7 according to a report by Variety. This will be the first time that Meyers will host the ceremony and he would be a natural choice since NBC broadcasts the Golden Globes Awards. His colleague Jimmy Fallon hosted the ceremony earlier this year.
It’s only seven weeks left before the telecast, which will also mark as the 75th ceremony. It’s going to be challenging for Meyers to host the ceremony given the recent scandals around Hollywood and it will be his job to light up the mood. Given the way he handles the controversies on his late night talk show, he will surely be able to tackle it gently. Fallon’s hosting earlier this year received mixed reviews. His opening presentation was praised, but his monologues were panned.
According to the report, Meyers was approached early on but did not commit until just the past few days. Ellen DeGeneres, Tiffany Haddish, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler were also approached to do the honors of hosting the ceremony. Insiders said that it’s increasingly becoming a hard sell to line up big stars for hosting gigs since the commitment is significant.
The nominations for all film and television categories will be announced on December 11, 2017. Meanwhile, the 90th Academy Awards this March will be once again hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This might be his “redemption” for the Best Picture fiasco that happened earlier this year when La La Land was first announced as the winner, instead of Moonlight.
NBC has also announced that they will air a two-hour retrospective on the Golden Globe Awards, celebrating its 75th anniversary, this coming December 13. It will be hosted by Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack. The 75th Golden Globe Awards telecast will air live January 7 from the Beverly Hilton.
