Is there ever a thing as too much content? Possibly. The sheer amount of movies and television shows is quite staggering, from documentaries to live sports to well-produced series that keep you on the edge of your seat. Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have been great for seeing new shows (Netflix Originals have been a breath of fresh air), but free-to-air TV has its highlights, too, as does innovative live TV streaming options. So, with all the possibilities out there to see amazing TV, what should you be up to date with?
Counterpart
Ever wondered if there was a parallel universe with a doppelganger of you out there? Well, J.K. Simmons certainly finds out in the incredibly captivating show called Counterpart. A series with more secrets and twists than you can shake a stick at, Counterpart begs the question of who we really are deep down, and who we can trust in a world full of lies. When a rogue citizen from the parallel dimension starts killing off people from ours, Howard and parallel Howard (both J.K. Simmons) are drawn into the conflict and attempt to stop things before it all gets out of hand.
The Magicians
Can you picture Harry Potter and his classmates and what they’d get up to in their college days? The Magicians is a pretty good example of what happens to young adults with magic powers, e.g. a lot of mischief and debauchery. When Quentin Coldwater discovers out that a magical world exists on the border of our own, he makes the leap and manages to gain acceptance into the magician academy. The show discusses the lengths that young people will go to prove themselves in such a competitive environment, but also the immense fun that comes with college.
Blue Planet II
Sometimes, the most beautiful things in the world are simply natural wonders. Such is the case with Blue Planet II, a documentary series which uncovers the mysteries of the world’s oceans. The creatures which live beneath the waves are varied and fascinating, and after the crew filmed for close to four years, we have a real glimpse into things never before seen on camera. Narrated by the brilliant Sir David Attenborough, Blue Planet II gives us the chance to see the current state of the world and learn all there is to know about our incredible sea life.
NBA
Now, for some sports. The National Basketball Association’s 2017-2018 season is in full swing and is looking very interesting. Right now, the 30 teams are all jostling for a spot in the playoffs (only 16 can make it), where they’ll battle through round after round until one team from the Western Conference will match up against one team from the Eastern Conference in a seven-game championship series.
Last season’s winner — the Golden State Warriors — are continuing to dominate the league with their superstars in Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, but the Houston Rockets (currently leading the Western Conf.) could well dethrone the Warriors in the playoffs. Plus, the Cavs will always stand a chance with arguably the world’s greatest player — LeBron James — suiting up for the squad. Tempers have been flaring night after night, with players going at each other and often the referees. There’s electric highflying dunks, huge game winners at the buzzer, and more than enough drama to keep everyone entertained.
Game of Thrones
Finally, if you’re not aware of what’s been happening on the brilliant HBO series Game of Thrones, then there’s never been a better moment than right now (but seriously, where have you been this whole time?) The eighth and final season is reportedly coming in 2019, and things are going to become epic in a way that has not been seen on television before. Season seven will be hard to top, but we know there will be a lot of fascinating storylines to wrap up. We’ll get to see what happens with Jon and Daenerys’ love story, Arya’s revenge against Cersei, plus how the entire world will fare against the seemingly unstoppable White Walkers. The end of the show is coming, but will it be a happy ending for everyone? Unlikely. That said, the Game of Thrones universe will continue long after, with prequels coming in 2020.
