SAS Soldiers Try On Special Star Wars “Boba Fett” Style Helmets

SAS Soldiers Try On Special Star Wars “Boba Fett” Style Helmets

I was going to be kind, I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I’m a Star Wars geek and as such I can say that these helmets do look awesome, but they look nothing like Star Wars. Maybe I’m a purist, maybe I got myself a little psyched up when I saw the headline that spoke of these helmets, but the fact remains that they look great, but the only thing they even closely resemble is General Grievous at best, and that’s even stretching it. While it looks like they might be fully packed with a few different options that do in fact benefit the soldiers wearing them, I am going to go full on nerd and try to educate others that might think that the Star Wars reference is warranted. If you want to disagree by all means, it’s a free country.

They’re not Star Wars design however.

This is Boba Fett’s helmet.

You see the massive differences right? Where the helmet the SAS are using is more shaped to the skull Boba Fett’s is more like a contoured bucket you place over your head before sealing the bottom. Plus, the visor is a lot more effective. It grants a lot better visibility and if our technology would ever catch up to our imagination then the interior of the visor would be able to grant 360 vision, read heat signatures, and offer a lot better forward and peripheral vision than the helmet the SAS are using. Calling that crazy-looking, skull-fitting contraption a Boba Fett helmet is kind of insulting really. But hey, I’m a Star Wars geek.

This is General Grievous‘ helmet.

A lot more similarities here. The grill-work is different and obviously this mask wouldn’t cover an entire human head, but the design is far more similar to what the SAS are currently testing out. The side fins seem like they’d just get in the way though.

Any new kind of tech that can help soldiers preserve their lives and the lives of their squad is always helpful and more than a little useful in the field. The mere fact that it has heat vision capabilities is awesome. But, still nerding out, it’s still not a Boba Fett helmet. If people would look at the design and take it to heart it might actually be beneficial, but for now the current design seems to be working just fine, it’s the wording that might get people confused.

Maybe one of these days the tech will mirror the imagination that’s put into futuristic armor, weaponry, and the kind of gadgets that our favorite scifi characters employ. Until then it looks like we’re still taking leaps and bounds towards new and impressive gadgetry. I do agree the helmet looks intimidating and could possibly be of tactical use. But the visor of the actual Boba Fett helmet seems like it would be far superior to almost anything being used in the field right now, especially if the tech experts were able to look at it from different angles and minimize any flaws.

But that’s a Star Wars geek talking.
