The show Sailor Moon has been a widely loved program that has been watched by viewers of all ages and has been seen to be popular among men and women throughout many years now for different reasons. The show also manages to boast one of the most iconic female villains of all time in Queen Beryl, even if it seems like there’s not all that much to her. The only downside is that her story and her origin are explained a lot more in the manga than they are in any adaptation that’s been taken on by anime. The manga have the advantage of going into greater detail thanks to the length and the fact that there are less time constraints, but the anime at least shows a part of what Beryl is capable of and what why she’s such an interesting villain. When going up against a force like Sailor Moon a villain has to be somewhat dangerous and more than a little powerful after all.
Here are a few things you might not have known about Queen Beryl.
10. She used to look very different.
Between the manga and the anime there’s a pretty big difference. In Sailor Moon Crystal, the manga, Beryl had dark black hair, innocent-looking eyes, and was dressed in something that wasn’t quite so challenging to the eye or the senses. But as Queen Beryl she took on a whole new bad appearance including big red hair, cruel eyes, and an outfit that is of the type usually reserved for villains.
9. Her origin story has more to it.
At one point Beryl was a very innocent and common sorceress that didn’t seem capable of hurting a fly, but thanks to her desire for a certain prince someone else managed to coax that malicious spirit out of her and put it to a much different use, which was to create the Beryl that fans know and either hate or love to hate today.
8. She’s extremely tall.
How tall you are really has to more to do with what part of the world you come from than anything but Queen Beryl stands at a rather impressive 6’1″ which is considered very tall for a woman. Considering that the Sailor Moon girls stand in the 5′ range, several inches below Beryl, this is actually a huge size discrepancy, unless you happen to live in a region where being six feet tall is considered normal.
7. She appears in every version of Sailor Moon.
This confirms the fact that Queen Beryl is a rather important figure since she shows up pretty much everywhere or at least gets mention when it comes to Sailor Moon. She’s been there for ever adaptation in some way and this proves that she’s an integral part of the story.
6. The original English dub for her was horrible.
It’s not so much the voice that was a problem, it was that the story line for Queen Beryl was almost eradicated and she became another run of the mill villain to be thrown in for effect and not much else. Her back story was one of the more tragic in the entire story and kind of needed to be told in order to flesh her out and make the story worth it.
5. She’s the third strongest entity in the Negaverse.
Seeing as how she was created by the one being that represents Chaos itself in the series it’s not hard to imagine that Beryl could even be the second strongest since she’s gone unmatched by many within the series. But this is also another argument for why her character absolutely NEEDS better representation at times.
4. At one time she was an earth kingdom sage.
So if you’ve been paying attention to this article or to the series for long enough then you’d know that Beryl was fairly innocent at one point. She’s from earth, was a low-ranking sorceress, and for the most part didn’t have much of a mean bone in her body until she was corrupted.
3. In Sailor Moon Crystal there’s a minor deviation to her character and to the story.
In this version she doesn’t appear quite a threatening, in fact she almost seems too cartoonish, and she ends up fighting all the girls instead of just squaring off with Sailor Moon. It’s unknown why this was set up in this manner but it is a difference that some people noticed.
2. She has several different attacks.
A good villain usually has more than one avenue of attack that can be used when they’re being pressed, and why Beryl isn’t much of a melee combatant she does possess a lot of different attacks that range from her impressive spells to whipping her hair about and using it as a weapon.
1. She was an acquaintance of Alan and Ann.
This seems a little more inconsequential when you really think about it but since the two heard about earth from Beryl it does take on a slightly greater meaning in the story.
There are several other interesting quirks to Queen Beryl that might have got missed. Feel free to mention those you can think of.

This has a lot of inaccuracies and contradictions.
I’m not trying to be rude, but it’s a bit much.
We don’t know that Beryl was innocent and good before, though she is drawn that way.
Her story in the Dic dub was pretty much the same as in the Japanese dub since she had no real backstory besides the fact that she attacked the Moon Kingdom.
The Negaverse was exclusive to the Dic dub, using it as a point of reference is confusing as it did not exist in the Japanese version and had nothing, canonically to do with Chaos.
Queen Metalia was the being created by Chaos/the Cauldron, not Beryl.
It created Metalia, Death Phantom, Pharaoh 90, Queen Nehelenia (which I don’t understand) and of course Chaos itself.
Beryl may have been powerful, but I don’t think we have any definitive rank for her. In my own opinion, Nehelenia. Chaos Galaxia, Metalia, Death Phantom and Sailors Phi and Chi would blow her away.
Crystal is more closely following the manga. In fact, in the manga when they face Beryl, it is Sailor Venus who kills her, not Sailor Moon.
And the one about Alan and Ann (Ail and En) is false unless you are discussing the Dic dub, which is not canon.
Again, not trying to be rude, I’m just passionate about Sailor Moon and dislike seeing false information spread, even if it is not malicious.
I do apologize for the misinformation as it was not my intent. I will admit to not being much of a Sailor Moon fan and I am therefore bound by my research. Again I am sorry if this offended you.
