Rick and Morty damn near immediately took the world of animation, sci-fi, and raunchy comedy to new heights. Each episode and season after only further cemented the Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon show as one for the history books. While the franchise of Rick and Morty started with smaller animated shorts, similar to The Simpson’s start to fame, the show quickly became so much more. With licensing across all media such as mobile games, comic books, board games like Dungeons & Dragons, and even appearances in Fortnite. However, most recently, Adult Swim, the television studio that gave Rick and Morty the ability to become all it has, announced that a series of shorts based on previous Rick and Morty episodes would be released on the network in the future. Below, we’ve detailed the new limited Rick and Morty anime series set to premiere on Adult Swim and what other details we know about the upcoming collaboration with varying anime studios and artists.
Rick and Morty
Rick and Morty, as stated above, immediately took the various genres that make it up to new heights, which hasn’t stopped since the first episode. Although if you compare the first season to the deeply twisted multiversal threats represented in seasons after, more fans likely would have been along for the ride from the start. However long it may have taken for the rest of the world to love Rick and Morty as some of us Adult Swim-raised fans, the show was still attaching its name to various collaborations and expansive projects that extend further than a television show. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have gone their separate ways for projects outside of Rick and Morty numerous times, such as with the show Solar Opposites, other television programs, and even video games, such as the recently announced High On Life from Squanch Games. With the success of the already released five seasons of Rick and Morty, and many more upcoming and additional projects, the show has attracted some high-caliber fans, such as artists, animators, other studios in general, and more. Such high-caliber talents have created Rick and Morty projects of their own now or are inspired by the upcoming Rick and Morty anime series, although some Rick and Morty anime projects have been released already.
Rick and Morty Previous Anime Projects
Previously, before the announcement of the upcoming Rick and Morty anime series, several interesting Rick and Morty anime projects have already come for fans to enjoy since 2020. Although there have only been four Rick and Morty anime projects before the announcement of the newest Rick and Morty, they were primarily standalone entries, at least compared to the original Rick and Morty show. The four previously released Rick and Morty anime projects were released separately from each other and are considered anime short films. The Rick and Morty anime short films were Samurai & Shogun, Rick and Morty Vs. Genocider, Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), and The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara were all released separately over a 19-month span, from March 2020 to October 2021. The studios involved in the original Rick and Morty anime short films included Studio Deen, Telecom Animation Film, Sola Entertainment, and Yamato Works Inc, as well as other companies, voice actors, writers, directors, and more.
Upcoming Rick and Morty Anime Series
While different studios and creatives created the previous anime short films over the 19-month span it took for their four releases, the upcoming anime series will be less of a standalone entry and more of an anime-style season of a Rick and Morty season, with original content. The overall Rick and Morty anime series will be led by Takashi Sano, who has already proven his abilities for the role with his previous Rick and Morty anime entries, Rick and Morty Vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil). Unlike the comic books that initially separated themselves from the regular canon of the show and then became a version of their off-screen adventures, the upcoming Rick and Morty anime series will be entirely in its own continuity, with clear inspirations from the original Rick and Morty and beyond. Overall, the Rick and Morty anime series will be like Rick and Morty, at least regarding the number of episodes, as Adult Swim has already given the series a 10-episode order to make it an entire season. As the series will be ten episodes, fans can be sure to get some sort of fill of Rick and Morty between seasons, regardless of when it begins to air.
