NCIS has been one of the top-ranked TV shows for so long that it’s hard to imagine how things have come to be what they are at this time, but those that have followed the show since it’s first season have seen things change again and again until the show is barely recognizable save for those few familiar faces that remain. It’s been said by many that losing some of the biggest stars of the show would be a horrible idea since people know NCIS by those faces and those characters, but so far it’s continued to be one of the favorite shows still. The sun might be setting on NCIS however now that most of the original talent is gone, no matter how great their replacements might be or how skilled the actors are at making people fall in love with them. That kind of magic is hard to get back once it’s gone.
Here are some of the top finales of the show throughout its many seasons.
5. Honor Thy Father
Finding out that Gibbs had a father and that he was every bit as stubborn as Gibbs was came as something of a surprise during the later seasons. While Ralph Waite played a great character despite his late arrival he was certainly a shock for many happy eyes. The fact that the show featured him so prominently after a while wasn’t too hard to fathom since he was a great counterpoint to Gibbs and made him seem just a little more human and less like a super-agent. His presence made us realize that Gibbs was just a kid at one point and not entirely sure of himself at all times. But when Ralph passed away, in real life and in the show, it was a heavy blow to everyone on a very emotional level.
4.Til Death Do Us Part
The bomb that went off and almost decimated NCIS headquarters was bad enough, but the real kicker was that Ducky was seen having a heart attack at the end of the episode, leaving everyone to wonder if he was going to be the next to kick off or if he was going to be noticed by someone and saved just in the nick of time. Losing characters on this show is nothing new, but it’s certainly not appreciated by the fans, especially when it’s one of the most beloved characters on the main cast. Ducky has his quirks and is hard to follow sometimes but he’s also kind of the favorite old-timer on the crew since he’s always got a story to tell or a memory to relay.
3. Family First
Many of those that have watched the show religiously probably felt their jaws drop when it was first revealed that DiNozzo had a child with Ziva, and then he was going to leave NCIS. This is after all Anthony DiNozzo we’re talking about, one of the guys that’s been around the show since the start and has been the mouthpiece for the group on more than one occasion. Some people might not have liked Tony as much but the thing about him is that past all the movie references and the wisecracks and such Tony was still a good guy that did his job and cared about his teammates. It almost seemed like another nail in the lowering coffin of NCIS.
2. Twilight
This was a serious blow to the NCIS fan base and to the show since Kate was actually one of the favored characters after her inclusion. To see her gone so quickly was something that a lot of people weren’t expecting and weren’t exactly that accepting of when it came to what they wanted. She’s survived so much other stuff in the show that having her taken out by something as cowardly as a sniper’s bullet was a sad and ultimately frustrating death scene that left people wanting Ari dead without a shadow of a doubt. Even Ziva was kind of seen as the bad guy for wanting to stick up for Ari the moment she came on the show.
1. Two Steps Back
It might be safe to wonder just how many more actors NCIS can stand to lose until they finally just killed the show since losing Abby is tantamount to kicking the show off a cliff and hoping it can fly on its own. First Kate, then Ziva, then Tony, and now Abby. The core group of the show was being threatened continuously throughout from season one and finally things have just been taken so far that people have actually wondered what’s left for the show. Thankfully it’s been renewed and will continue forward, but if they ever lose McGee, Gibbs, Ducky, or even Jimmy they might need to re-evaluate just what they’re doing.
NCIS has been going strong for so long that it’s hard to see a single person leave the cast, especially since they’ve been seen as an integral part to one of the best shows made in the last two decades.
