Even though it started out as a ride, Pirates of the Caribbean remains profitable. For proof, look no further than the fact that the fifth movie in the franchise Dead Men Tell No Tales made close to $800 million at the box office, which is more than enough to make it one of the highest-grossing movies to have ever been released. As a result, it is no wonder that Disney continues to be willing to invest significant sums of money into Pirates of the Caribbean, as shown by the hundreds of millions that it is willing to provide budget-wise.
What Was the Pirates of the Caribbean’s Latest Craft Services Budget?
One excellent example is the budget for the craft services for the latest movie Dead Men Tell No Tales. Supposedly, the actor who plays Commodore James Norrington was curious enough to ask the chef in charge of craft services about the budget that had been provided to him. To this, the chef responded that he had an “essentially unlimited” budget, which was a simple but nonetheless evocative phrase for a more prosaic estimate of $2 million. Bear in mind that the estimate was no more than an estimate, meaning that interested individuals should not assume that the $2 million budget for craft services was indeed $2 million. However, the estimated figure is nonetheless useful for providing them with a rough sense of the scale at which the production for Dead Men Tell No Tales operated at.
With that said, the budget for the craft services was not as extravagant as it sounds. After all, Dead Men Tell No Tales was not being filmed in the middle of urban civilization but rather in much more remote locations. As a result, while the cost of the food was important, there were other considerations as well. Suffice to say that when there is not a great deal of transportation infrastructure in the region, costs start to skyrocket because interested parties have to arrange for alternate means of transportation to get the supplies to where it needs to go. In the case of Dead Men Tell No Tales, the food for hundreds and hundreds of people had to be flown in on a regular basis, which explains much about the size of the budget that was allocated to the chef in question.

It will be interesting to see what sort of budget Disney will provide the sixth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which is expected to be made at some point in the future. After all, the ending of Dead Men Tell No Tales seems to suggest that Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and Davy Jones will be making a return to the franchise, meaning that the sixth movie might be intended to bring back some of the people who liked the earlier movies but have cooler feelings about the more recent installments. Whatever the case, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has proven its profitability in spite of how it started, meaning that the question isn’t whether the budget will be big or not but rather how big it will be.
