The Originals has always been a show about family, and it was very much all about the Mikaelson family in Season 2 of the CW vampire drama, with both Esther, Mikael, Kol, and Finn returning, Freya being introduced, and the siblings’ Aunt Dahlia serving as the big bad. And while family will always be a major theme in The Originals, it will be explored in a little bit of a different way in the show’s upcoming third season, as the sired vampires of the originals (in many ways, the “children” of Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah) arrive in New Orleans to seek power and vengeance, something that may force Elijah and Klaus to have to put aside their differences again and fight together.
However, this will not be a happy or simple union, as The Originals‘ Daniel Gillies told us earlier this month at San Diego Comic-Con, especially after everything that Klaus did to him and Hayley at the end of last season. And speaking of Hayley, helping her in any and all ways, as she’s still trapped in her wolf form except under the full moon, will be Elijah’s “sole quest” this season, says Gillies, as he tries to keep Hayley’s humanity alive by bringing Hope to see her, among other things.
But even though so much of the action and drama of The Originals Season 3 will obviously be going on in the present, this will also be a very flashback-heavy season of the CW series, with Gillies telling viewers to “expect f***ing wigs.” Wigs aside, though, he’s excited to continue exploring the history of the original family, especially with these vampires from their past coming to town.
Watch our full interview with Gillies below, where he also talks about some of the new locations we may see in Season 3 and the possibility of crossovers with The Vampire Diaries. And be sure to check back here for more videos from The Originals cast and producers, along with interviews with actors and writers from other major series, such as Heroes Reborn, Agents of SHIELD, and Legends of Tomorrow.
The Originals Season 3 premieres on the show’s new night, Thursday, Oct. 8, at 9 p.m. on The CW.
