Had this been the type of trailer that Alien got back in the day it seems fair to state that some folks might have suffered a coronary just watching it. The sheer terror of it would have kept a lot of people from ever going to the theater since they could only hope and pray that they’d seen the scariest parts during the trailer. Despite how intense the original trailer got near the end it still looks pretty vanilla compared to this new one. It’s amazing really what was scary back then versus now, especially when it comes to science fiction and horror. Back then the Alien franchise, which was still beginning, was something to be terrified of, but now it’s almost a joke. So many memes and parodies have been made of it that the franchise has suffered a great deal in terms of its dignity. It’s still considered a creepy movie but the original will forever hold a special place in the minds of a lot of people.
Think about it, no one had ever done this before, at least not in a way that people would stand up and pay attention. An alien that has acid for blood, is born from inside a human host, has a gestation period that’s so insanely short and yet doesn’t feel as invasive as it should, and is essentially a nonstop killing machine. As the years have gone on we’ve found out that the xenomorphs were in fact engineered to be this deadly, but we’ve also found out that unless they have a queen or a ruling hive mind to guide them they’re loose cannons that could go in any direction they want. They’ll kill, feed, kill again, and continue on and on until something kills them in turn. They’re the perfect predator since they can exist in just about any climate and adapt almost perfectly. In fact it takes so much to kill them that by the end of the second movie people were likely thinking that they were a major trump card in the hands of those that wanted to use them against anyone.
They breed even quicker than rabbits since in Aliens they had taken over an entire colony by the time the company even got the nerve up to go and look, and they have absolutely no fear of anything. Each and every xenomorph will throw itself at anything that enters their territory or endangers their hive without a thought to their own safety. In the first movie there was thankfully only one, but it decimated a small crew in such a small amount of time that it proved just how ultimately deadly it was. Granted, the crew weren’t trained soldiers, but they knew the ins and outs of the ship and could have possibly come up with a better plan than going into the inner workings of the vessel to flush it out. This trailer though definitely brings the urgency that eventually came to the movie when Ripley was left all alone to face down the creature.
It’s essentially where Ellen Ripley became a legend among scifi fans.
