You may have been reading the headlines with regard to Wisconsin’s upset over Villanova. More importantly you’ve been reading about the game winner made by Nigel Hayes. And you’ll also read plenty of headlines saying that Hayes compared himself to Michael Jordan. I know this is tourney time but come on people. He wasn’t doing that in the least bit. He was just psyched about a victory and happened to bring up Jordan’s name because of a move he did to get the game winning shot off. Here’s his quote after becoming the hero.
“We wanted to get me isolated on the wing,” Hayes said. “I felt like I could take him. The way they’ve been playing the game, they’ve been crowding me, so I knew I would have the baseline. I drove baseline and if you guys are familiar with the Michael Jordan highlight, the fake spin-back, I did the my fake spin-back, got to my left hand and fortunately it went in.”
Hayes is known for being an outspoken player and he did finish with 19 points and 8 boards so credit should come where credit is due. But even Nigel knows he’s at most the third best player on this Badgers team. Even so, you can’t blame the guy for talking about how he helped his team pull off the biggest upset of the tournament so far. P.S. Nigel Hayes is a great name.
