It’s wise to say that one should never say never when it comes to Hugh Jackman taking up the role of Wolverine yet again, but if you’re really expecting more than a cameo here and there then you might be expecting a little too much. Jackman, who is in his 50s now and is starting to show his age just a bit, is getting to the point where he’d rather not suit up again and take on the role, but there might be the possibility of such a thing when it comes to the next Doctor Strange movie as Evan Lewis from We Got This Covered states. By now people should know that characters in the comic books rarely ever stay dead and if they do it means that the company has no further use for them and can’t see a way to make that much money from them any longer. But Wolverine has been such a staple of the Marvel universe that even thinking of never bringing him back is enough to give a lot of people the kind of anxiety that might have them biting their nails and gnashing their teeth at the very mention. Wolverine is just too good to let go as some people would say, but even if he does come back, meaning Jackman, it’s not expected to be for much more than a cameo.
Let’s face it, Jackman made the character on screen and despite being way too tall for the part he still brought the classic gruff, rough and tumble attitude that people were so used to when it came to the Canadian mutant. Seeing someone else play the part is almost unthinkable since honestly he’s been so great that trying to fill his shoes is something that might be kind of difficult despite the wealth of talent that’s currently residing in Hollywood. There have been mentions of Tom Hardy, Taron Egerton, and a few others that might take up the mantle as Mark Hughes of Forbes has stated, but so far Jackman is the only person on anyone’s mind. Some might say that he did TOO good a job since trying to imagine anyone in his place almost seems like sacrilege. But in the next Doctor Strange movie it’s likely that we could see Strange moving into the reality where the X-Men do exist, or at least did, where he might encounter Wolverine in some form or other, which would then make it possible to imagine them finally being welcomed into the MCU eventually. It’s coming anyway, you have to know this since Disney owns Fox, but when it’s going to come is still the question.
Seeing Jackman as the popular mutant again though is likely to be fleeting since he’s pretty much hung up his claws and decided to move on with his career after Logan. But if he could be convinced to come back for a cameo every now and again it would be a great treat for the fans, especially as there might eventually be a passing of the torch of some kind that could occur, if only to insure that there will still be a Wolverine in the future to come since as a character he could create a story line all his own without any need for the X-Men. It’s not likely to happen that way since so many people want to see him with the team and with various other mutants as he makes his way through history, but as a character Wolverine could easily go it alone and be just fine. In fact the only other story line I can think of that might need some work would be his time in the Weapon X program, but that might feel to many like it would be stepping on too many toes. Considering that it’s been shown in animated form, in X-Men: Origins-Wolverine, and even for a short period in X-Men: Apocalypse, this time in Logan’s life almost feels as though it’s been hit more than enough and should likely be left as it is unless someone is brave enough to take it on again.
But as far as Jackman’s participation in this part once again, don’t bet on it being likely that he’ll take up a whole movie unless there’s a good enough reason since a cameo is about all we should be expecting at this point, and even that might be kind of generous. As a big Wolverine fan I’d love to see the character taken up by Jackman again if it happened to be feasible, but given that the character did die on screen the idea of bringing him back, even with the multiverse in use, would be a bit too much. As a cameo, yes, definitely yes, but as anything else, Jackman has done his bid as Wolverine and he did great. If the character’s going to be revived it needs to be passed on to someone else.
