Netflix Officially Orders The Punisher Spin-Off Series

The Punisher

While some viewers may debate whether or not Daredevil Season 2 was better than the Netflix superhero drama’s first season, there’s one thing that pretty much all fans are in agreement about: Jon Bernthal’s version of The Punisher was pretty much perfect. As the emotionally tortured and brutally violent Frank Castle, Jon Bernthal was the standout performer of Daredevil Season 2, and many fans have been clamoring for The Punisher to get his own spin-off series ever since this version of the character made his debut. Now, according to EW.com, it sounds like Bernthal will get his chance to bring The Punisher to life again in a series of his own, as Netflix is officially moving forward with a Punisher spin-off series.

As I stated above, EW.com is reporting that the Punisher spin-off series is an official decision from Netflix, and that the news will be publicly announced later in the day on Friday. Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) will serve as showrunner for the Punisher series.

This Punisher spin-off will be the sixth planned series between Marvel Television and Netflix. Daredevil kicked off Marvel’s string of Netflix dramas back in April 2015 and returned for a second season this March, while Jessica Jones debuted back in November and has already been renewed for a second season. Still to come are Marvel’s Luke Cage (which stars Mike Colter and hits Netflix on Sept. 30), Marvel’s Iron Fist (which stars Game of Thrones‘ Finn Jones in the lead role), and The Defenders, a team-up series that will feature all four main heroes from each of Marvel’s Netflix series (and now could possibly have an appearance from The Punisher as well if his spin-off is successful).

Marvel fans, did you enjoy Jon Bernthal’s take on The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2? Do you think his character can carry an entire series on his own? Comment below and let us know.
