Nashville Season 3 Episode 19 Review: “The Storm Has Just Begun”

Nashville

There’s a music charity event on Nashville, and a warm fire of music appreciation turns into some major fireworks.

Jade St. John is moonlighting as a schoolgirl who finally gets the chance to go out with the coolest guy in class. Trying to convince Luke to record a country duo with her, Jade agrees to go with Luke to a music charity event. If Jade thought that winning over the country world was going to be hard, she hasn’t seen anything yet. Now we know that Juliette is a handful. There are only a few people really equipped to deal with her, let alone go toe to toe with her. When Jade outbids Juliette at the auction, Jade has no idea she’s just made a terrible enemy. What Jade sees as friendly competition, Juliette sees as war, and she replies in kind with some very cruel words for Jade. Given the way that Jade folded, I’m still not sure she has the backbone to make the career change that she wants to. Luckily, Luke is there to comfort Jade musically, among other things.

Juliette has always had a very sensitive ego, so it’s more important to her than ever that she get back in the spotlight. The downside to this is that she’s not spending any time with her daughter or her husband. Juliette definitely isn’t excelling in responsibility at the moment, but Avery’s mom/new babysitter is on hand to make a few good points to her son. Avery knew exactly who he was marrying, he agreed to the “for better or for worse” portion of the vows, and placing blame solves nothing. So Avery heads over to Juliette to work things out, but after Juliette’s temper tantrum, that plan goes down the drain. Eventually they stop fighting, but the look of desperation in Juliette’s eyes tells me this is only the beginning of a very serious problem to come.

With Avery officially gone from the band, Gunnar and Scarlett are at odds over how to proceed with the band. She’s extremely frustrated over the situation, but she probably wouldn’t be as upset if she wasn’t hiding from the truth. Scarlett is a musician, Gunnar is a musician, Caleb is a doctor. Sorry, but mixing the passionate with the practical without a balance does not end well. While we’re all desperately hoping that Scarlett soon realizes that, we’ll have to settle for her recognizing that she can’t let complications with Gunnar interfere with the music.

Rayna and her family have to skip the event when Deacon gets a call about a liver match. Everyone is filled with love and hope until Caleb informs that that Deacon has a low grade fever, and if it gets any worse before the liver arrives Deacon is disqualified from receiving the liver. While Deacon is worried about everyone else, all of whom have scattered, Gunnar shows up and lends Deacon a supportive ear and some much needed encouragement. It helps, up until the point that a complication with the donor liver prevents Deacon from getting the transplant.

Also, in one of the sweetest moments of the series, Daphne gets a chance to shine on her own. Left with her father while Rayna and Maddie are at the hospital with Deacon, Daphne instead shares the stage with Luke. Finally this addresses the fact that Daphne’s needs have been severely neglected while Maddie’s have taken center stage. You finally see the stress this little girl has been under when she admits to Teddy that her Mom’s doesn’t really feel like home anymore, and she wants to come live with him instead.

Layla and Will, once enemies, now are in a good place and have managed to find real relationships. Will is very happy with Kevin, especially when jealousy gets Will to step up and fight for his shot with his guy. Layla’s choice in men may be questionable, but her connection with Jeff is proving to be intriguing. Jeff consistently strikes down Layla’s idea to tour with Jade, saying that Jade is only out for herself (guess Jeff likes people who remind him of himself). While the majority of people would think that Jeff is simply acting like a stung ex, and some may just not buy that his feelings are genuine, Layla sees through all of that. Layla recognizes that Jeff’s concern and his feelings for her are genuine, even if she doesn’t agree to his course of action for her career.

I’m not sure how much faith I have in Jade, but I will definitely be downloading Christina Aguilera’s “Shotgun.”
