And with that, the kingdom has come crashing down. Jeff’s demise ultimately led to the fall of the entire Edgehill Republic label, and the chaos that ensued will have lasting repercussions for all involved artists for the rest of this season on Nashville.
When Edgehill falls, Layla, Will, and Luke are left twisting when it comes to their careers. Will and Luke are fielding dozens of offers from other labels, but no one will touch Layla with a 100 foot stick. For Will, Luke, and even Jeff, the answer becomes clear. Luke agrees to buy the masters up for grabs from Edgehill and start his own label, bringing Jeff on board for the business aspect and signing Will as his new artist. Luke later decides to double cross Jeff because no one would even consider signing with a label that employs the man who single-handedly took down Edgehill.
Layla has a different experience re-launching her career. After being promised by Jeff that she would be signed to his new endeavor with Luke, Luke refuses to sign Layla. So Jeff swallows his pride and tells Layla to approach Rayna about joining her label, since Rayna is the type of person who will listen to what Layla has to sing. Layla spends all day waiting for a meeting that never happens, until she finally gets the chance to plead her case to Rayna. Rayna listens to Layla’s new sound and is impressed, deciding to sign her. After Jeff is kicked to the curb by Luke, Layla even offers to have Jeff as her manager.
This week Deacon, who is still hiding his condition from everyone, is offered the chance at a clinical trial. The problem is if he accepts the position, he can no longer be on the donor list and the odds for both are equally bad. After going through indecision, frustration, and a temper tantrum during a recording session with Avery, Deacon calms down long enough to fully consider his options. As Deacon advised Will with his signing situation, it’s better to trust the devil you know. So Deacon decides against the clinical trial in favor of staying on the transplant list.
Deacon’s situation is having a heavy effect on Scarlett, as evidenced by the fact that she can’t even finish a song. In a similar situation, Gunnar suggests that he, Scarlett and Avery start singing together again. After a great comeback performance, the three decide to formally unite as a band. Scarlett gets enough positive energy from this experience to even ask out Deacon’s doctor!
Avery definitely needed to get back to his own music after the stressful week he’s had. A stir-crazy and extremely pregnant Juliette cancels her Vogue shoot, then redoes it thanks to her husband’s advice. The result is a tastefully done, risqué shoot which causes Avery to lose his breath, marveling at his beautiful wife after a very good day.
While rejoicing in Jeff’s firing and picking up the Edgehill scraps, Rayna hires Bucky to be her new Head of A&R at Highway 65. Unfortunately the normally together friends immediately clash over creative differences. When Rayna decides that she’s going to sign Layla, she tells Bucky that she never wants her label to lose sight of the music and be just a number’s game. That is, after all, why Edgehill came crashing down. Rayna also assists Sadie with the lawsuit against her. After standing by Sadie and agreeing to back her with giving ex-husband Pete a settlement offer, Rayna makes it clear she will bury him if he ever comes near Sadie again.
You would think that after all of the label drama and jumping around, that this was the story with ripple effects. However it may be Teddy whose actions also will come to light. After getting the heads up from Jeff that his secret is no longer safe, Teddy makes the absolute worst move possible and tracks down his prostitute friend so they can get their stories straight. Not that this wasn’t a bonehead move to begin with, but it’s even worse coupled with the fact that a criminal investigative team is able to witness and record the Mayor of Nashville talking to a prostitute.
The changes just keep coming. What will be in store next week on Nashville?
