Nashville Review: Putting the Demons to Rest

Nashville

This week in the capital of country music, everybody’s looking to be set free. Free from the past, free from the expectation, free to just live their lives on their terms. Let’s recap and see who had the most liberating experience this week on Nashville.

Now that she knows Juliette was responsible for Jeff’s death, Layla has been rejuvenated with the purpose of destroying her enemy. In her mind the best way to do this is to get close to Avery and discover all of Juliette’s weaknesses. As her new producer, Avery grows comfortable around Layla and tells her the truth about where Juliette has been after a bad run in with Luke. Layla counsels Avery to stop living a lie, so he gives Juliette 24 hours to publicly come clean about their divorce. Juliette does so, which frees Avery from the weight he’s been feeling for some time.

Will has had a really rough year since coming out. Everytime he tries to perform something goes wrong, and this time it gets dangerous when a guy  in the crowd throws a beer bottle at Will’s face. Since the guy was throwing hate slurs Will’s way, Will had grounds for charging the homophobe with a hate crime, but he chooses not to. He comes up with a plan instead. Will goes right back to the bar and gets back up on stage in front of the homophobe, choosing to let his music do the talking. Like any weak bully, the guy backs down and Will is surrounded by cheers.

Colt and Maddie’s relationship is severely on the rocks. Maddie thinks this is a direct correlation of them sleeping together, but it’s not actually that at all. As much as Colt loves Maddie, his life just isn’t the same anymore. Living with his grandfather has taught him a structure he didn’t know before. While most kids would think this was strict, Colt enjoys it because it’s such a contrast to what life with Luke was like. In the meantime Maddie has been working closely with Cash, which is good for her spirit but goes against the deal she made with her mother to sing with Daphne. Maddie is growing up, and she should definitely learn to stand on her own, but Daphne’s emotions are going to reach a breaking point soon if she’s not careful.

Luke hasn’t spoken to Colt in weeks. He has a nonexistent relationship with his son and his professional reputation has taken a huge hit. Trying to get Juliette back to work is not going to happen, so Luke needs a new strategy. He runs into an old pal Riff from his early days as a country singer. Riff took the path Luke didn’t, choosing to give up a life on the road to stay at home raising his kids. Luke desperately needs help on his tour, so he asks Riff to rejoin him like the good old days. Riff agrees on one condition, that his whole family come along for the tour. Given that Luke’s family has basically disowned him, this plan works out just fine.

Deacon and Rayna are officially married so now it’s just about settling into a routine. Rayna continues to work hard with Highway 65, and Deacon is enjoying running the bar. They weren’t looking for new inspiration, but in walks Vita Martin. She’s an aspiring singer Deacon and Rayna want to snatch up before someone else discovers how talented she is. Deacon hooks her up with a job at the Beverly so she can work and chase her dream of singing, but Vita panics when she realizes she’ll have disclose that she has committed a crime. Rayna finds her living out of her car, and encourages her to still apply for the job. Deacon and Frankie offer it to Vita since they both know what it is like to go through hard times, but at the end of the episode Frankie tells Deacon he thinks Vita stole $500 from them.

Also in the hour, Gunnar and Erin’s relationship reaches its conclusion, and we’re all rolling our eyes wondering why Gunnar and Scarlett don’t just get back together already.

Which storyline were you happy to see come to an end? Which one looks most intriguing as the season progresses?
