Admired for his singing prowess and contagious cheerful attitude, Larry Myers Jr. better known as Mr. Buttermilk Biscuits was one of the most exciting personalities to feature in TLC’s My 600-lb Life. Since 2012, the reality television series has chronicled the lives of morbidly obese patients as they strive to turn their lives around. With the help of Dr. Younan Nowzaradan through diet and gastric bypass, patients like Sarah Neely, Annjeanette Whaley, Lucas Higdon, and Christina Phillips have been able to manage their weights, transforming their lives to chart new paths.
The same can’t be said about Mr. Buttermilk Biscuits, one of at least four My 600-lb Life patients who died in 2023. Two months after the passing of Angela Gutierrez from Season 7, Larry Myers Jr. passed on. The Season 10 patient died in mid-2023, 16 months after his time on the show. His death came before Paul MacNeil’s, another Season 10 patient who died on September 21, 2023. MacNeill lost his life in a car crash while heading to work. Vianey Rodriguez from Season 7 also died in 2023 from pneumonia complications.
Reminiscing Mr. Buttermilk Biscuits’ Time On My 600-lb Life
Larry Myers Jr.’s bubbly disposition despite his life-threatening condition endeared him to the TLC fandom when he appeared in a January 2022 episode of My 600 lb Life. A gospel singer from Houston, Texas, Myers was the focus of “Larry’s Journey,” Season 10, Episode 13. He was bedbound, weighing 940 pounds as he talked about his eating habits and weight struggles. The singer originally from New York traced his weight problem to his childhood, when he developed an unhealthy relationship with food.
Mr. Buttermilk Biscuits was raised alongside three sisters and was regarded as “the spoilt one.” This was because his mother pampered him. She fed him whenever he wanted to eat, which made Myers feel special and happy. This changed as he got heavier and began school. Myers soon discovered he was dyslexic: he couldn’t read at school and was bullied because of it. He started struggling with anxiety, found solace in food, and packed up more pounds. At age 10, he was already weighing 200 lb.
To get a fix, Larry Myers Jr. underwent surgery in 2015 and lost 600 pounds. However, the death of his mom and nephew saw him re-embrace binge eating. He regained weight, leading to his appearance on My 600 lb Life in 2022. “When I’m cooking it’s the only time I’m happy, besides when I’m eating,” he said on the show. “I need what food does for me, it takes the pain and the fear of what’s gonna happen to me away.” Myers lost 100 pounds at the end of the episode but needed to lose more weight in the next three months before he’d be cleared for bariatric surgery.
Larry Myers Jr. Died From Heart Attack At Age 49
Mr. Buttermilk Biscuits died at his home in Houston, Texas, on June 13, 2023, three days after he celebrated his 49th birthday. Sources close to the singer disclosed he passed on after suffering a heart attack. Myers’ death was announced on Facebook by his cousin Todd Darell. “It’s with great sorrow that we announce the passing of my dear cousin Larry Myers,” reads the June 17, 2023 post. “Larry has fought the good fight. He has overcome some of the biggest challenges he has ever had to face. Rest well Junior, you will be missed.”
Until his demise, Larry Myers Jr. was committed to his weight loss journey. As a guest on Ricky Smiley Morning Show in March 2022, Myers divulged that he got depressed, resumed binge eating, and regained 200 pounds. However, he assured the host that he was working towards achieving his weight loss goals. The singer disclosed he underwent another surgery and had lost 100 pounds. Sadly, his efforts were cut short as he succumbed to heart failure.
