So yes, this commercial for the Emirate’s Boeing 777 first class suites look awesome. But they also look unreasonably expensive. This is basically a cabin to oneself on an airliner, luxury the type of which a lot of frequent fliers probably won’t ever be able to afford or even glimpse in their lives. It has all the amenities that a person would need for a long flight and even features a seat that folds down into a bed or can be used as a chair, as was originally intended. It looks absolutely inviting, especially with the TV and the warm, cozy feel it brings, but the price tag attached to it seems like it would be a little insane.
Even the business class on the Emirates Boeing 777 is a little nuts since each person essentially has their own cubby to sit in and relax, while the poor folks stuck in coach are still elbow to elbow and will wait in their little bags of peanuts and soft drink while the folks further up the way have everything on demand. It’s not so much that there’s inequality in the air, after all the people in the business class and the suites are no doubt paying good money for the luxury, it’s the thought that money is the great divider.
The seats are nice, the service is on point obviously, and so long as you can pay, you can have the luxuries. If you can’t you’re herded into the back of the plane like cattle. Sound familiar? While the people in the front smile, pat themselves on the back and enjoy the luxuries the rest of the folks in coach are crammed in just waiting to get to their destination. Perhaps it might be more cost effective to actually grant folks of all class the luxury of flying with Emirate’s. The idea wouldn’t be to grant anyone what they didn’t pay for, not at all. But a little extra something for bothering to use the airline, a polite ‘thank you’ for the business seems like it would go a long way towards making the trip a little easier to withstand.
The rich aren’t the problem, it’s the deference given to them thank to their money that is the biggest issue. While these suites are very nice and posh, they are also a huge expense that the airline could possibly spread around by making sure the entire plane is fitted with comfortable and relaxing seats, and perhaps a few monitors in coach class as well so that they too can enjoy the flight in style. By taking care of all of your passengers you stand a better chance of keeping more passengers and therefore increasing your business. I’m not a business major and I don’t understand half of the practices but that sounds pretty good to me really.
So yes, the suites are amazing and definitely look very comfortable. But why not make sure everyone is equally comfortable? It could increase business and remind the rich folks that they’re not the only ones on the plane.
