What You Need to Know about What’s Next for the DCEU

Wonder Woman - 2017

So far, the DC Extended Universe has seen four movies released. Of these four, Wonder Woman is the one movie that can be considered a undisputed success in both a critical and a commercial sense with none of the claims of under-performance that plagued its predecessors. As a result, the DC Extended Universe has been provided with much-needed momentum, though it remains to be seen whether its upcoming movies can live up to the expectations set by their predecessor.

Here are five of the movies that we can expect to see in the DC Extended Universe, though it should be noted that there are more at some stage of development:

Justice League

At the moment, Justice League is in post-production, meaning that interested individuals can expect to see it on November 17 of 2017. Like its name suggests, it will be a crossover movie featuring not just the core trio of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman but also other classic members of the Justice League lineup such as Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg. It is interesting to note that one of the producers Geoff Johns has stated that Justice League will be more optimistic than its predecessors, which would be appropriate for a movie about what is presumably the founding of a powerful force for good in the setting.

Aquaman

People who have been paying attention to Justice League should be familiar with the sight of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, who will be receiving his own movie that is expected to see release towards the end of 2018. James Wan is the man who has been chosen to direct the movie, which has a screenplay written by Will Beall. So far, it has been confirmed that characters such as Mera, who is Aquaman’s love interest in the comics, as well as both Black Manta and Ocean Master, two of Aquaman’s villains, will have important roles in the movie.

Shazam

At the moment, there still isn’t much known about Shazam, though some people might remember mention of Dwayne Johnson having been chosen to play the character Black Adam as an anti-hero in the movie. In brief, Shazam refers to the character Captain Marvel, who is a boy named Billy Batson who has been entrusted with the powers of Solomon, Heracles, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury for the purpose of fighting evil. As a result, whenever he shouts “Shazam,” he transforms into a super-powered adult in the character’s distinctive red-and-gold costume. Since Black Adam is supposed to one of his corrupted predecessors from ancient Egypt, there is the potential for something interesting in this movie.

Cyborg

In 2020, fans of Cyborg can expect to see his solo movie of the same name, in which the character will be played by Ray Fisher, who has already appeared in Batman vs. Superman and will be appearing in Justice League in said role. Some people might be confused by Cyborg’s inclusion in the founding roster because of their recollections of older depictions of the Justice League, but it should be mentioned that he was made a founding member in DC Comics’s 2011 reboot. For those who are unfamiliar with the character, Victor Stone was a promising high school football player with a tense relationship with his father but was nonetheless saved by him via cybernetic prosthetics when he was caught up in an accident, thus starting him on the path to becoming a superhero.

Green Lantern Corps

There was a 2014 announcement for a movie based on Green Lantern called Green Lantern Corps. At the moment, not much is known besides that David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes are co-writing the screenplay for the movie, which will see release in 2020.
