Monet Mazur made her film debut in 1993 and has since built up an impressive portfolio of work covering both TV and film. In 2018, she was cast in her biggest TV role to date on The CW’s All American. The series has been a critical and commercial success, with Mazur’s strong performance as Laura Fine-Baker drawing praise from all quarters. Find out more about the actress with these 10 quick facts.
1. She and her siblings are all named after artists
Mazur was born in LA to parents Ruby Mazur, an illustrator best known for creating the iconic tongue logo for the Rolling Stones, and Valerie Chasin, a model. Considering their creative backgrounds, it was probably not surprising that when it came time to choose the names of their 4 children, Ruby and Valerie chose an artistic theme. Each of the siblings was given the last name of a famous artist as their Christian name: along with Monet, there’s Matisse, and twin brothers Cézanne and Miro.
2. She was a teenage model
Mazur began her career in her teens as a model and actress on commercials. Her most famous work from that early period includes three TV commercials for Gap shot with director Adam Daelay in 1999. While 2 of the ads (“Everybody in Cords” and “Everybody in Leather”) saw Mazur posing up a storm in conventional modeling territory, the third,” Everybody in Vests”, also showcased her talents as a singer.
3. She made her TV debut in 1993
Mazur’s TV debut came in 1993 as Brandee Fields on Days of our Lifes. That same year, she made her first appearance on the big screen as an unnamed “Flirting Woman” on Addams Family Values. She’s since appeared on numerous TV shows, including Castle, CSI: Miami, Cold Case, Strange World, Chuck, and Rizzoli & Isles, while her film career has run to roles on the likes of “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”, “Welcome to Hollywood”, “The Mod Squad”, “Mystery Men”, “The Learning Curve”, “40 Days and 40 Nights”, “Raging Angels”, “Angel Eyes”, “Torque”, “Stoned”, “Live!”, “Comic Book Villains”, “Dead Man Running”, “Stark Raving Mad”, “Kiss the Bride”, “Just Married”, “Monster-in-Law”, “In Memory of My Father”, “The Last International Playboy”, and “The House Bunny”
4. She’s a multi-millionaire
Thanks to her extensive body of work on TV and film (not to mention her previous incarnation as a model), Mazur is, according to Celebrity Net Worth, worth the hefty sum of $2 million. Thanks to the salary she’s currently pulling in on All American, it’s unlikely her fortune will be going anywhere but up.
5. She’s a mother of two
In April 2005, Mazur married her partner, the British film director Alex De Rakoff (The Calcium Kid (2004) and Dead Man Running (2009)). In the summer of that same year, the couple welcomed their first child, a son called Marlon De Rakoff. In 2011, the pitter-patter of tiny feet was heard once again in the Mazur/ De Rakoff family with the birth of Luciano Cy De Rakoff. In July 2018, the couple made the sad announcement they had filed for divorce.
6. She took a career break
In 2012, Mazur decided to take a year away from filming to focus on raising her young children. She’s described the time away as an incredible experience, explaining “Life in this business can move so fast, I felt it was slipping away from me and I needed to just stop for a bit and live. It was an incredible year of traveling and learning new things, different ways to live, new languages and cultures and I feel that we all grew so much, closer together as well as individually.”
7. She’s a huge yoga devotee
When she’s not on set, Mazur can usually be found practicing her downward dog. The actress has been practicing Kundalini yoga for over 15 years and has claimed to have had a “transformational” experience while she was practicing it particularly intensely during pregnancy. Other than yoga, her other pursuits tend to run to the active, with her favorite activities including hiking, Pilates, and biking.
8. She’s a budding designer
Unsurprisingly given her name and artistic heritage, Mazur has been keenly interested in design for years. With her flawless taste and a keen eye for detail, she’s helped several friends with the design of their homes, including Pamella Protzel Scott of Ella Moss and Splendid. “I am influenced by the architecture and design of the sixties, a mix of Italian design, vintage and a little seventies so it’s a very eclectic mix,” she’s said to Romy & The Bunnies about her style. “Art is hugely important for me, to have beautiful things to look at. It doesn’t matter to me if its many different influences going on because I tend to stay in the same color palettes and hues, and it just works. But you have to enjoy living in your creations when you walk into a room for me, it has to move you, you have to be transported. If you’re not moved, then what’s the point!”
9. She’s a big shoe fan
Mazur is a huge lover of shoes, albeit expense one. Asked by Dragon what advice she’d give to fans, she released the pearly worlds of wisdom “ Don’t buy cheap shoes! Sorry ladies, but they don’t last, and they’re bad for your feet. Invest in a shoe that you can wear all the time. I am a creature of habit so when I find a boot I like (Rag and Bone, Acne) I wear it every day for weeks!”
10. She used to be in a punk band
During her 20s, Mazur was a member of the punk rock group, Nancy Raygun. Her association with the music world doesn’t end there: her cousin Bret “Epic” Mazur is the lead singer of the band, Crazy Town (which may explain her appearance in the music video to their track, Revolving Door).
