Ever since the hellacious opening half hour in the second episode of the Mob Wives season, there hasn’t been a whole lot of “action”. I’m not one of those that thinks all wives shows are only good for brawling and drunken antics, but for a minute, it’s felt like there’s been a whole lot of handwringing about the possibility of something happening vs. something, y’know, happening. Getting a look at Drita’s separation from Lee and Renee’s shredded psyche have made for more introspective, deeper television that you expect from something like Mob Wives, but you kind of want them to force all six ladies together once in a while, partially to make all the fretting actually worthwhile.
The Halloween episode of Mob Wives continued the show’s focus on what may happen, with Drita and Ramona holding dueling parties on the same night. This, of course, puts floaters Carla and Renee in a tough spot, as they have to decide where to go and for how long. Renee’s anguish over being in the middle has been touched on by the show before, but it’s Carla’s situation that makes me most interested. There’s no arguing that she and Drita are still BFFs and all, but you’d be a fool not to wonder about potential underlying conflict that could result from Carla’s friendships with Karen and Ramona. Drita may not be admitting it on the show, but look at how often it’s been brought up and vaguely hit upon. Plus, a couple of episodes ago, Carla brought up her meeting with Karen and Drita’s reaction suggested that she might not be as comfortable as she’s indicated. Carla may have stayed at Drita’s Halloween party, but this is something to keep your eye on going forward; there’s bound to be a tiny bit of resentment from Drita for Carla consorting with the “enemy” and not holding her down as much as she probably could.
It may be more adult for Carla to try and not have drama with anybody, but you can understand Drita feeling more vulnerable now that the people that hate her have befriended her main ally on the show. Reality TV is all about having the numbers on your side and as of right now, as tough as she may be, Drita doesn’t have ’em.
The parties themselves seemed to be pretty fun, though Drita’s felt more like a Halloween party and Ramona’s felt like “let’s put on silly costumes and go to the club”. But what I took away from the gatherings wasn’t an appreciation for Carla’s Cher costume or newfound respect for Renee’s ability to cut a rug, both of which I definitely had. It was that Karen and Ramona are, officially, the worst. The worst of what? Everything. How can Karen come at Drita for “taking Lee” from her when she, currently dating David, spent her time at Ramona’s party with boobs out and getting her flirt on? There’s nothing wrong with a woman dressing sexy or innocently flirting on a fun night out, but it didn’t come off like that on screen in this case, with Mob Wives hammering home the fight they had last episode and making a point to show the guy + have her comment on it. It makes her look like a total hypocrite; after spending a season and a half proclaiming Drita to be everything wrong with femininity, more or less, to act like she did tonight undercuts the moral superiority she’s used to shame Drita. Ramona gets points deducted for thinking Drita wants to be anything like her (…please) and not checking her guest list twice, resulting in Junior and Renee having to leave after coming across someone flaunting cop connections. If you’re going to be offended by even the mention of the word “cop”, as Ramona was in a talking head, how about making sure you know who comes on your club outing?
Ramona was more focused on having a bigger, better party than Drita’s more intimate-but-looked-much-more-fun party and offended people that she needs on her side due to that negligence.
I do feel for Renee, as she’s on the verge of a breakdown over her split allegiance, but you can’t make people be friends that don’t want to be friends. It may make things easier for all involved, but sometimes differences between people are so vast that it simply can’t happen. You just have to work within that new paradigm or, if it gets too much for you, pick a side. Not the most ideal set of options, but something tells me that Drita, Karen, and Ramona aren’t on the verge of braiding each other’s hair and giggling about boys anytime soon.
Last night’s episode of Mob Wives still had the separation we’ve seen all season, with several cousins (Rena, Sadia) and friends (Etty, Lina) called in to make up for the fact that these women can’t be in the same room. That tension is both a good and bad thing, as it can make any group gathering feel ready to jump off but keeps any gathering from having all members of the group. I still very much enjoy Mob Wives and having a look at the lives of six women with very different experiences to my own, but the show works better bringing them all together, something happening, and then spending a couple of episodes sorting out what happened. We’re approaching the finale and I expect major fireworks going forward, so strap yourself in and get ready for some carnage.
