Melissa McCarthy to Star in Action-Comedy “Super-Intelligence”

Nobody can doubt the talents of Melissa McCarthy when it comes to comedy. She’s funny, and we’ve seen her deliver that even in some of her films that don’t perform so well. The truth is McCarthy doesn’t have one brand of comedy; she can probably do it all. But we’ve seen her fair share of flops that might make someone question whether or not she should try another genre altogether. We don’t think that at all, but some people certainly do. It’s either that or she should just stop working with her husband–actor and director Ben Falcone–altogether.

That can be agreeable. Out of the three movies that the couple has done together so far–Tammy, The Boss, and Life of the Party–only one made us laugh uncontrollably because of McCarthy’s comedy. It seems like the couple is out for redemption with their fourth attempt at a successful movie partnership. This latest comedic venture will be called Super-Intelligence, and it’ll delve into the sci-fi world of artificial intelligence. In the movie, McCarthy will play the character of Carol Peters, who will get a chance to become an AI’s subject of observation. This AI is the super-intelligence that the title is based from.

We can already picture some of the elements and how they will play out. Many of McCarthy’s films tackle issues with cliché, not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, but it is easy to expect. We can probably expect some physical comedy as well; just the thought of McCarthy and some robot being together is a funny enough thought to get us even more curious about the film. However McCarthy approaches this next project will be highly instrumental to how good the film will end up being. At this point, we’re not so sure. Our prospects of a McCarthy film always gets us excited, but the letdown from previous films have been too much to bear because we like to see McCarthy succeed–simply because she’s a funny lady.

The truth is we’ve loved McCarthy since her Sookie days from Gilmore Girls. We even loved her in Mike and Molly. She certainly got us gagging in Bridesmaids, and her portrayal in Ghostbusters was just the right mix of all that’s funny about her. If you pay attention to all these films we’ve just mentioned, none of them have Falcone in the mix (except for a quick stint on Gilmore as an actor). Maybe the fourth time will be the charm for these two, but they definitely need something big to make all the collaborations of the past disappear into view.

McCarthy is picking up pace again after a quiet 2017. It appears that she’s also trying her hand at other film genres with movies like The Happytime Murders, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and The Kitchen. One is a neo-noir comedy; the next is a biographical drama thriller. The third film is a crime drama. Are we all ready to see McCarthy do heavier, emotional pieces? Maybe it might be time. We’ve always known she can do more than make us all laugh; it might be time that she learns the same.
