If you’ve wanted to see the life of Leonardo da Vinci dramatized on screen, then you need to see Leonardo. The show is a fictionalized depiction of da Vinci’s extraordinary life as an inventor and artist, most popularly known as the creator of the masterpiece “Mona Lisa.” The show also portrays his humanity, indicating that despite his genius and exceptional creativity, he was also a human and experienced mortal pitfall.
Frank Spotnitz and Steve Thompson create Leonardo. Spotnitz is best known for his work on hit TV shows like The X-Files and, more recently, The Man in the High Castle, while Steve Thompson previously worked on Sherlock, Vienna Blood, Doctor Who, and Jericho. The show has received mixed reviews, with one particularly harsh critique coming from The Guardian, who plainly said of the show: “All in all, it’s awful. The script is woeful. Half of the actors look absolutely stricken with horror, and those who are giving it a good try – including the stalwart Turner – make you want to cry with compassion. Numbers paint the whole thing, and there are moments when all you can do is shake your head in disbelief that this kind of thing is still being made in the year of our Lord (that’s him, under John’s oil and beside the angels) 2021.” However, fans of da Vinci would be remiss not to give this show a chance. One reason to give this show a shot is a cast that does a fair job of portraying the different real-life figures on the screen.
