Truth be told I was a pretty serious tennis play once upon a time. Back then and today it’s not exactly the biggest forum for trash talk. Other than occasionally doing a fist pump or screaming “yeah!!!” to pump you up, you don’t really spend much time ragging on your opponent. Sure, in the history of the game players have jawed at each other but it’s nothing like in other pro sports. But when I saw this video today it was actually meaner than most of the trash talk I’ve seen in any sport. The reason is because it was genuine.
In a doubles match in Estonia that was broadcast on television a female player hits a pretty awful lob which set up her opponent for an easy overhead smash. Said opponent completely whiffs on the overhead and hits nothing but air. The crowd laughs. The players laugh. But the girl who hit the lob?
Right when she gets back up to hit a serve, she uncontrollably starts laughing again. I have no idea who won the match but man, that’s gotta feel awful.
