It’s hard to feel sorry for celebrities, but living with bipolar disorder is something that’s rough for everyone. Mariah Carey has recently opened up about her own struggles and finally decided to tell people just what it’s been like. Bipolar disorder occurs when one has manic states that can last for weeks or months and are typically followed by bouts of depression that can last just as long. The reason for the onset of bipolar disorder is largely unknown, as it can have its roots in one’s genetics or their environment. But the seriousness of it is something that people have to deal with all the time. Some people experience highs that can be seen as pleasing and sometimes even a little unnerving since they tend to seem so very perky and upbeat all the time. But when they hit their down phase it’s a struggle for some people just to get out of bed in the morning.
Mariah Carey was diagnosed back in 2001 but didn’t want to tell anyone for fear that it would be exposed and her career would suffer. Take a beat for a moment and think about a star’s career and how little it takes to ruin them. Now think about this: people would have understood. Her fame has been running so high for so long that she thinks would have outed her and ruined everything probably would have gone so far to see if she was seeking treatment or not and then left it alone. It’s not a communicable disease or anything that might have been gained by being foolish on her part, so any scandals or such would have been short-lived and even nonexistent. But again, celebrities and their image are everything to them quite often, so it’s possible that she was simply worried about the impact such a thing could have simply because she didn’t understand the implications that fully.
By now however she no doubt understands that her fans love her no matter what. Those that have followed her for so long aren’t going to just drop off and declare her unfit for their adoration simply because she has a disorder that is perhaps one of the hardest to deal with. For her own part however struggling with this disorder alone has no doubt been quite difficult, as being manic for weeks and then depressed for just as long is a hard thing to cope with. There is a possibility of treatment but it’s not perfect and it’s not going to solve the problem altogether. Plus, the idea that she’s finally ready to come out with this must mean that she has finally come to terms with it and understands that no one is going to judge her for it. Bipolar disorder is a very serious condition that affects a good number of people, but like anything that befalls one’s favorite celebrity it’s not something that people will stop loving them over.
Turning on one’s favorite celebrity usually takes a lot more than finding out that they’re bipolar.
