There are some movies and movie franchises that will continue to be analyzed long after their last films are made. While the Godfather trilogy ended in 1990 with the final Godfather III being released, the original and sequel are still incredibly relevant. Whether the movies are being referenced in a college course, a song lyric, or seen in a poster, the films will remain as some of the most influential and famous movies of their generation. The movie franchise almost has a “bigger than movie” feeling as to this day there’s still uncut footage being released and stories being told about things that happened on set with the actors, director, crew, etc etc. Almost like The Beatles when you really think about it. Now there’s even more. According to Joblo:
Variety got the goods that HBO is developing a movie called Francis and The Godfather, which will follow the early stages of the film’s beginning and production, including the casting of up-and-comer Al Pacino and screen vet Marlon Brando. The movie will be working from a script from Andrew Farotte
Peter Bart, who worked closely with Coppola and executive producer Robert Evans will consult on the film, which went on to be one of the biggest movies of the 70?s, going on to make $245 million globally on a $6 million budget and win three Oscars for best picture, best actor (Brando) and best adapted screenplay.
In should be interesting to see the making of The Godfather actually become a featured film which is what this is trying to do. What we don’t know is who is going to be cast as Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and everyone else. The Godfather is long considered to be one of the greatest gangster movies of all-time. Some even consider the sequel to be better than the original. I happen to be a Goodfellas guy myself but obviously The Godfather isn’t a distant second.
It’ll be interesting to see if HBO can pull this off.
