The Magicians Go for Plan B

The Magicians Go for Plan B

I am willing to state that as of right now “Plan B” is my favorite episode from The Magicians. It was not the drama, or the writing that gives it this lofty title. It was how it returned our characters to a happy place, even for a little while.

Julia and Katie discover that the only way to truly abort the demon is to have an exorcism that costs one million dollars. There’s a nice bit about how none of them have had to worry about money since becoming magicians, which I loved.

At the same time, Margo and Eliot are short on cash for Fillory and so the gang decides to rob a bank. This Oceans Eleven inspired episode was everything I needed to revive my love for this show. I loved everything about it. Quentin was seeing weird things again (hey, Alice). Penny and Katie got back together (finally)! Penny was really thrilled about robbing a bank (so cute)! The best part, the magic was super entertaining.

I also loved meeting the two butcher witches in Chinatown. They were strange, but also charming. When Julia cannot pay for the exorcism upfront one of the women sends an invisible monster to kill Julia. We learn that she created the monster with just a wooden spoon, and it cannot be defeated. Why? “Can’t! She has a hundred spoons!” Hysterical. I want more of these women!

Unfortunately, the Mission Impossible part of the heist was more impossible than Penny bargained for, and he ends up trapped in the vault. Alice, permanently attached to Q, makes a deal with him. She will help him save Penny if she can possess his body for thirty minutes a day. He agrees.

They save Penny only to notify the magical guard, but why didn’t she know there was a break-in all along? That was a major flaw in this episode. Maybe the only one.

In the end, Eliot’s clone is mortally injured, causing the real Eliot to have a seizure in Fillory. The spoon monster beats Julia badly, but the exorcism happens. Next week I think we will learn about this complication Katie mentioned.

I predict that the writers will continue to torture Julia, Alice will not relinquish control to Quentin, and Margo will save Eliot in the last ten minutes of next week’s episode. What do you think will happen?
