Why “Life of Kylie” isn’t Resonating Well With Fans

Kylie Jenner, who is the youngest daughter of Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner, who has been benefiting from being on Keeping Up with the Kardashians since age nine apparently decided that it was time for her to step out on her own with her own reality TV show. Her reasoning might have been that with everyone else getting most of the attention it was time she made her own contribution to the socialite culture.

If the ratings of her show are any indicator, she is potentially doomed to have only 15 minutes of fame and added fortune. The show’s ratings are near the bottom for her time slot, and her last rated viewership is half of what she had a month ago. But we should not be so fast to blame her for the failed show. Her 11 years prior to seeking her own audience has a number of built in disadvantages.

Her life growing up has been largely been available on social media. It is not that anyone who has followed the Kardashians for the last decade hasn’t heard of Kylie or read about the details of her life up to now. That means she will have to come up with brand new material for her fans (which there apparently are not as many as she thought) to generate interest. That leads us to the second problem.

Her shows have no storyline and are boring. Think about it. What does she do with her life as a 19 year old socialite? What would you do as a 19 year old socialite? Appearances at board (bored) meetings, like most socialites, is a normal bodily function. Being superficial to one degree or another is also par for the course. Once you get past the glitz and the glamor parts of her life, what is left to show? And most of that is already well worn history from her sister’s shows.

Kylie has admitted she doesn’t like the lime light. This is a huge problem because what people will tune in for is what they don’t know about a person. Social media and the mainstream media cover all the juicy stuff, or even a hint of juicy stuff, long before she would have a chance to make an episode out of it. This leaves only two basic choices for creating material from the news: tell her side of the story in depth or deny the story completely. As someone who prefers to be superficial and resists getting up close and personal, she does not give viewers a reason to tune in.

One question she should be asking is what do her fans expect of her. She has social media accounts that hey loyal fans follow, so one hopes she doesn’t expect them to watch a rerun of her life. Being one of many public celebrities and generally rich people means her fans have seen what her fame and fortune can buy. They get it. As long as she chooses to keep her private life private, she likely will always be the 8 year old girl who the public will not pay much attention to.
