We were surprised when Dreamworks made the announcement that How to Train Your Dragon 3 will be the final movie in the highly successful franchise. The movies could’ve probably gone on forever (like Shrek did), and Dreamworks could’ve milked it for all it’s worth. The first movie was an instant success, drawing in a global total of $495 million. The sequel surpassed that by a mile with a gross of $621 million in worldwide box office sales. This sequel was the reason for the creation of the animated series, and it seems that will go on at least. But alas, we’ve come to the third and final movie of the franchise.
We’ll surely never forget the big voices with the big names that have played the leads in the movie. We know that these actors will be reprising their roles for the upcoming film: Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, and Craig Ferguson. Baruchel lent his voice to main character Hiccup, while Blanchett voiced the character of Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Butler, on the other hand, voiced Stoick’s character, while Ferguson voiced his character Gobber. We haven’t heard about any other actors/actresses that might reprise their roles, but we’re just glad that the top four bills have been confirmed. We expect many of the other roles to be reprised as well, as this franchise has become one of the most beloved animated films in recent years.
Although there are limited information on specific movie details such as the plot and settings, we do know one thing. The third film will be titled How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. One can only imagine what that means, but we can all surmise that the animated film will be full of action and adventure. Writer and director Dean DeBlois has done an impressive job in the last two films, and we can only expect even better things to happen for the third installment. It is going to be the last film, after all, and there’s plenty of room in the story of Hiccup and Toothless to leave us with something that ties it all together or a film that will leave everything open to interpretation. This film may end the franchise, but it doesn’t mean the story of Hiccup and Toothless have to end.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is expected to hit theaters in early 2019 on March 1. We’ll be on the lookout for further information about the upcoming film. We expect some big marketing materials to come out soon considering that the How to Train Your Dragon can only go out one way: with a big bang. We suggest getting an early start and re-watching parts one and two to get your ready for the end. You can even start watching the animated series if you haven’t already done so. It’ll be nice to complete the story (and a film collection) once the movie is out, but for now, we’ll be watching out for at least a sneak peek trailer.
