Without a doubt, Quentin Tarantino is my favorite writer and director. Can you blame me? Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django are all blockbusters and cinematic masterpieces created by this legend. So can you imagine how excited I was when it was announced that Tarantino’s next film would tackle one of the most infamous crime sprees in American history… The Manson Family murders… Wow… If you’re familiar with Tarantino’s work, I’m sure you’re already imagining the level of gore, over the top violence, and memorable characterization we will likely see in this film.
But all speculation aside here’s what we know about the movie so far.
The script is almost complete.
Reports say that Tarantino is currently putting the final touches on the script, and of course, he also plans to direct the film. Production could begin as soon as summer 2018.
Although buzz is building, not much about the script has leaked.
Although one report says that the story could center around Sharon Tate. If you’re unfamiliar, Tate was the most infamous and brutal murder carried out by the Manson family. The 26 year old actress and model was married to now infamous director Roman Polanski and also eight months pregnant when Manson’s cult brutally murdered her and four others at her home.
Casting has begun.
Quentin Tarantino has met with Margot Robbie to play the role of Sharon Tate in the film. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Robbie is in high demand in Hollywood since she starred in the blockbuster Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn. Some reports say that she has already accepted the role of Tate, but no confirmations have been made as of yet.
Margot Robbie isn’t the only star who’s reportedly lined up to appear in the film.
We’re also hearing that Tarantino’s frequent collaborator Samuel L. Jackson will likely play a lead role in the film. Other reports say that both Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence are also being courted.
Sharon Tate’s sister reportedly isn’t taking the news of the film well.
A family source told RadarOnline.com that Sharon Tate’s sister has vowed to “make things very difficult” for Tarantino if he doesn’t bring her on board as a consultant of some kind. Presumably to keep Tarantino’s legendary use of excessive violence in check. The source goes on to say that 63 year old Debra Tate is “fiercely protective of her sister’s legacy.” In the end, Tarantino might have no choice but to include Debra Tate in the production of the film… Because she owns the rights to her sister’s image and likeness.
Debra Tate is already beginning to make her presence felt.
In an interview with TMZ, she said that Jennifer Lawrence isn’t pretty enough to play her sister and that the clear choice in her opinion is Margot Robbie… Ouch…
Conclusion
Controversy is already brewing around this film. But, that’s nothing new for Tarantino. If you ask me, I think he welcomes it, and it’s become a part of his legacy as a writer and director. Expect heads to bump with this one though. With Debra Tate owning the rights to her sister’s likeness and Tarantino’s maverick attitude of doing things his way there’s sure to be a lot of infighting and power plays behind the scenes. Personally, I just hope they find a way to produce an excellent film.
