In the history of sports there are no better athletes than Kelly Slater. Names like Babe Ruth, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Wayne Gretzsky always get thrown around in the history of sports (as they should), but Slater is perhaps the most dominant athlete in his respected sport of all-time. He has been crowned World Surf League Champion a record 11 times, including 5 consecutive titles in 1994—98. He is the youngest (at age 20) and the oldest (at age 39) to win the title. And really that’s just the start of it. We can argue about his dominance another day. At 45 years young, he’s still going strong.
What I wanted to show you today is something that’s simply amazing. In the world of sports, if there’s one thing I appreciate technologically it’s the GoPro. You have to admit it’s revolutionized the way we get to experience sports. Now fans get to have a first person view of what it’s like to ski down a mountain, glide through the air, be on the other end of a punch, you name it.
In what I think is one of the coolest uses of a GoPro has to be this Kelly Slater video of him riding through the perfect crest of a wave. Not too many people get to see what it’s like to actually go through a wave and Slater makes it possible.
