Jordan Peele’s already had a successful writing and acting career. He’s also directed some smaller projects during his tenure in Hollywood However, when Get Out came out Peele’s popularity and relevance as a director completely exploded. Not only did he create a new kind of horror movie but Hollywood is in full agreement that we have a completely new kind of director. Peele’s in high demand and lately there were rumors that his name was attached to an Akira remake. However, Peele has reportedly turned down the gig. Why? Because Peele likes telling original stories over remakes.
It’s nice to hear that considering we’re in a full era of reboots and original ideas seem to be few and far between. Back in February when Get Out was just starting to receive critical acclaim, Peele sat down for an interview with Fandango about potential remakes he would himself be interested in as well as why he prefers original storytelling.
“I think [I could do it] if the story justifies it,” he told Blumhouse.com. “Akira is one of my favorite movies, and I think obviously the story justifies as big a budget as you can possibly dream of. But the real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff.”
