Last night on The Late Show, a very familiar face joined Stephen Colbert for a mini Election Day musical. That familiar face, of course, was none other than Jon Stewart, Colbert’s former colleague from their time together on The Daily Show (before Colbert landed The Colbert Report gig, of course) and one of his best friends. Together, along with a young actress who was playing what Colbert called “an adorable little street urchin,” the two men performed a nearly 10-minute, song-filled sketch about the importance of voting this Election Day.
During the duo’s sketch, Stewart initially portrayed “The Mayor of Candytown,” who told Colbert that the child, just like everyone else, could do as she pleases. If she doesn’t want to vote in this year’s election, she doesn’t have to; that is her decision and whatever choice she makes is the right one for her. However, Stewart’s opinion quickly changed after Colbert told him that Donald Trump was running in this year’s election; in fact, Colbert saying that caused Stewart to do not just one but two spit takes, a callback to Colbert’s earlier election special that Stewart had been a guest on.
But last night’s Late Show mini musical didn’t just feature Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. The sketch also landed quite the major guest with one of Broadway’s hit stars, Javier Muñoz, who is now the leading man of Hamilton, and as great as both Colbert and Stewart are, their songs couldn’t live up to the musical heights of Muñoz’s performance.
