The good news is that John Wick 3 has a release date. The bad news is that it’s not until May of 2019. John Wick was something of a surprise for a lot of fans since Keanu Reeves hadn’t really done anything of note for some time before this trilogy. But when he came out as John Wick it swiftly became obvious that this was no mere hitman story, but instead something that bordered on Keanu vs. the world.
Since his debut in films Keanu Reeves has kind of been an up and down movie star that’s had his great roles and his ‘meh’ roles. He’s been in some truly terrible movies and performed some truly terrible roles such as Jonathan Harker in Dracula. His portrayal of English accent was embarrassing, and in truth he was about as stiff as a board throughout the entire film.
Then there was Point Break, which was a lot of fun but still allowed Reeves to get outplayed by Patrick Swayze’s character. Johnny Utah was just trying too hard and Bodhi was the guy that just went with the flow no matter where it took him. As criticized as it was however Point Break became a cult classic eventually and Keanu’s legacy began to grow. It was almost tarnished just a bit however when Point Break was rebooted and the characters were brought back to disastrous effect. Thankfully most fans that remember the original weren’t buying into it and still think if Point Break as one of his best films.
Devils Advocate, where he was side by side with the great Al Pacino, was yet another film in which Reeves was kind of shoved to the side. He did try, but acting alongside someone like Al Pacino is kind of hard to do if you’re trying to get noticed.
Then eventually came the Matrix. By this time Keanu had been in a number of other smaller, less popular movies that had kept his career alive but still hadn’t gained him any more renown in Hollywood. The Matrix managed to rekindle his career until about midway through the second movie, when it fell flat without warning. The story had just gone too far and incorporated too many moving elements without any real buildup or well-developed story or character arcs. Neo got lost in a maze of characters that came in and disappeared in an instant.
But John Wick is something special. A lot of people want to forget his stint in 47 Ronin where he played a masterless swordsman that’s somehow half-human and half-demon, but no one’s trying to forget John Wick. The first film was classic as you got to hear from others how terrifying Wick really was. He was essentially the man you sent to take out the boogeyman, and he was the kind of man you didn’t hide from since he would find you no matter what it took. In short, Wick was death’s messenger when he came calling, and his every breath was spent conveying that unspoken message to whomever was in his sights.
As of John Wick 3 however what we know so far is that John is no longer under the protection of those that once used his services in the past. Having broken the rules he is now the one on the run, and he’s vowed to kill anyone that attempts to collect the bounty that’s now on his head. It’s going to be a showdown for the ages when John Wick 3 hits theaters.
