Say what you want about Jay-Z, and a lot of people do, but his impressions of Snoop Dogg and Eminem are pretty spot on when he’s describing how they have their own sounds and are capable of making them into something that people want to hear. Jay-Z is one of the people in the rap game that you simply know has become more or less untouchable. He’s done his work and he’s become the legend he wanted and has managed to gain that level of status and influence that he no longer really needs to work so hard at it. Snoop Dogg and Eminem are the same way really but their differences stem from the fact that Snoop Dogg has moved on and, unless he’s still spewing shade at Trump, Eminem might finally be in the mood to move forward.
Not a single one of them had it easy a the rap game isn’t something you just break into and start becoming known. The work and the effort have to be there or the likelihood that someone’s going to ever remember your name is incredibly low. How they went at it though is kind of different since Jay-Z has never been quite as hard as Snoop Dogg or Eminem when it comes to his music. He’s been the smooth G, the guy that can lay down a track but is more or less fully in control of what he’s saying and his emotions at all times. He’s had a lot more fun tracks that have been serious with their lyrics but still offer a good vibe that have allowed them to be used in many ways. Snoop Dogg’s songs are the same way but really seem like they had more of an edge to them in the beginning. Seriously, if you listen to the album Doggystyle he goes pretty hardcore at some points and doesn’t let up until the track is over. Jay-Z knows how to go hard and can and will do it, but still, he seems a lot smoother in his delivery.
Eminem just seemed like a nut when he first came out. No one wanted to sign him, he was considered just another white boy trying to rap, but thankfully Dr. Dre took a chance on him and was repaid for his investment many times over when Eminem’s sound blew up. To a lot of people his raps were just flat out crazy and more about drugs, bashing on gay men and boy and girl groups, and saying anything to make sure that people knew what was rolling around inside his head. But once he got a lot of that out of his system he started to have fun too and created more meaningful tracks as well as fun songs that spoofed the hell out of a bunch of different pop icons. That eventually put a lot more people on his side, but the rant he did about Trump managed to get a few people hot under the collar and kind of put him in a different light with some folks.
Each rapper is highly talented and past the point of having to care what people think, and quite honestly they earned that distinction.
