It’s been confirmed, Groot is dead, long live Baby Groot. James Gunn has put this matter to rest it seems by telling fans what’s going on and why Groot is not the same guy that was featured in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Many people were under the impression that the big guy’s consciousness had simply transferred into this little twig when his bigger body died, but then think about it, does that happen with humans, or any other species? True, we don’t go out the same way Groot did, and we don’t procreate the same way Groot did either, but to think that the little guy would just be another Groot would be kind of silly.
Groot is a little more complex of a character than you might think since in truth he was introduced in Tales to Astonish back in 1960, but as a completely different-looking creature. In the 1970’s he showed up too, but still very different in appearance. The way he looks now didn’t come around until about the 2000’s when he started popping up more often. It’s been acknowledged that the earlier Groots were the same species but separate beings. That must mean that Groot is a common word among them, or perhaps the name they gave themselves. Who knows? What is known is that he’s extraordinarily tough, has one line throughout both movies that he repeats when speaking, and fiercely loyal to the Guardians.
He’s not terribly bright but he does possess enough brainpower to perform simple tasks as was shown in Guardians vol. 2, where he could have annihilated them all while they were fighting Ego or set the timer which would give them a decent head start on getting out before it blew. Rocket, the only guy that seems to really understand Groot, is the one person on the team that seems to be able to really get through to him about anything, while the others react to him in different ways. It kind of begs the question as to whether the Guardians really know if this Groot is not the one they remember or if it’s just a director’s secret.
Groot dying in the first movie was kind of an emotional moment but wasn’t at the same time. He became a loved character but he was introduced and then forced to bow out in the same movie so it was kind of hard to get that attached and then say an emotional goodbye unless you were a fan of the comics. Bringing Baby Groot into the picture now was something that seemed like a wise move since he created comedy as well as filled a needed niche. He wasn’t the big bruiser that he was in the first one but at the very least he provided enough support to the team that he was seen as valuable. Now that he’s growing bigger he should be able to do more, if he’s in the mood since during the end credits scenes it looks like Groot is going through a bit of a mood swing.
