Is Marvel Really Killing off Rocket the Raccoon?

Rocket

Just when you thought Marvel was growing tired of breaking hearts, Kirk Smith from ScreenRant reveals that they’re going to drop another bombshell on the fans with the death of another beloved character. In the defense of Marvel it might be one that a lot of people, generally those that have seen the movie and never read the comics, might not be entirely used to, but it’s still bound to be emotional if any semblance of it finds its way into the movies. Rocket Raccoon has after all been established as one of the more likable characters in the Guardians of the Galaxy and one of those that has been endearing throughout the MCU’s rise. Having seen him brought in during the initial buildup of the MCU and put in a position where he’s essentially the mouthpiece, or one of them, of the Guardians, he’s been something of a furry sidekick in some moments and the savior of the team in others. Rocket is pretty much the all-around badass type that has his limitations but doesn’t like to admit to them.

Considering his origin though and the idea that he was created and isn’t some strange, special hybrid that was conceived in a disturbing somehow natural way, it does stand to reason that Rocket would have an expiration date since a lot of creatures created in a lab typically have a failsafe that is instilled by their creators just in case anything goes wrong. Whether or not that’s the case with Rocket is hard to say but in the comics it’s already been established that he is dying, as his fur is falling out and he’s been having trouble with this stability and even standing up straight. When you consider that the average lifespan of a raccoon is anywhere from 2 to 3 years however you’ve got to admit that Rocket is something of an elder when it comes to his species. He’s been around a lot longer than most if not the rest of his species and as such has been cheating death in a big way more than once. To think that his date has finally come due is tragic and sad, but not terribly surprising.

Let’s just hope, as horrible as it sounds, that Rocket manages to find some peace in his final rest when he finally does kick off. Marvel and DC both have a nasty habit of bringing their heroes and villains back again and again through cloning, alternate earths, and various other methods that basically mean that we’ll never be without them so long as there’s a way for the writers to bring them back again, and again, and so on. Noah Dominguez of CBR has the right of it when it’s said that death in the comics is a revolving door since a lot of heroes and villains have made their way back eventually. There are only a few that have stayed dead, and it would seem it’s more about who can be inspiring on one side of the veil and who needs to come back because the fans won’t stop whining about it. Look at what happened with Superman, people lost their ever-loving minds when the man of steel was supposedly dead and gone. And then ‘poof’ he’s back in a few different ways until the mess is cleared up and he’s back for good. As much as I like Rocket, and I do since he’s been a psychotic but fun character for a while, it’s still a hope that he’ll be given a proper sendoff and be allowed to rest along with the few others that have stayed in the past and not resurrected or brought back simply because people can’t handle it. The comics have become something of a ‘safe space’ for fans that can’t bear loss, especially when it comes to fictional characters, and in truth that’s kind of saddening since at one point and time there were deaths in the comics that weren’t as reversible.

Rocket however seems content enough that he’s about to die, but his pride doesn’t allow him to waste away in front of his friends, his family, as he disappears to wither and die on his own. Of course his family finds him though, and the Guardians do their best to remind him that a family isn’t about what one person wants, it’s about taking into consideration the feelings of others as well. One can only imagine that Rocket is touched by this but also aggravated since he’s not exactly the warmest character in the group. But when it comes to helping his family it does seem as though he’s going to go back into the fray in the only way he knows how, with maximum firepower and the same attitude that’s carried him through so many battles thus far.
