Is it Time for a “Beakman’s World” Reboot?

Beakman’s World was among the many shows that was designed for kids in order to entertain and teach them at the same time back in 90s. Through a great deal of gimmickry and some hilarity Beakman became one of the most well-known performers on TV that kids loved to watch since there was always something fun to learn and he managed to engage them in a way that didn’t pander or talk down to them. One big reason why it wouldn’t be coming back in the same manner however is that getting the original cast to come back would be a bit problematic. Paul Zaloom, the main actor that presented the show, is in his 60s now, which isn’t much of a detriment, but his fellow actor Mark Ritts passed away unfortunately in 2009. Replacing actors is never really much of a problem but the main issue would be in how the show is presented and what might be updated to capture the attention of the children, a this is who the show is really for.

It stands to reason that those who remember Beakman’s World might appreciate a return to the ordinary show that they remember, but this is one time where the show would have to cater to the kids of this generation and show them how the world works in a way that makes more sense and is a little more updated considering that kids of this day and age do learn in different ways than we likely remember. Even if not that much has changed the children of this era are still different enough that a new method will be needed that was not quite as evident in our time as it is now. Puppets are still popular thankfully but at the same time they need to be updated along with everything else, and the learning style would need to be adjusted in order to reach the kids on a level that they could understand and in a way that parents both approve of and can possibly help out with should the children reach a point where their comprehension isn’t quite up to snuff.

That being said a reboot of Beakman’s World might be what is needed on TV today simply because the idea that a kids show should be simply entertaining without any real value has become the norm on some stations. For much younger children there is always PBS or the Disney channel to grant a sense of morality, ethics, and practical learning through a fun and engaging way. But for those that are stuck between childhood and adolescence there’s something else that’s needed, a ‘wow’ factor that too many shows don’t seem to have all that often. It’s something that comes and goes for the most part, a quality that some shows touch upon that is hard to fully grasp in words, but it is what keeps people watching and what gets their attention on the way to keeping them motivated to learn more and more as they go on.

Beakman’s World did tend to pander to kids a bit in order to remain a level-headed and evenhanded show, but it also challenged what kids knew and made it possible for them to gain interest due to the fact that it drew them in and almost dared them to dispute what was being taught. It even went so far as to take requests from viewers as to the subject matter of each episode and what would be discussed, which is something that many shows do but is still important as it keeps people from thinking that the programming is stale and doesn’t take into consideration the desires of the audience. Beakman’s World was there to teach the children while entertaining them and didn’t bother to separate the two most times in order to keep it lively and dynamic enough that it became known for being one of the craziest kids’ shows on TV, which was a proud distinction then. Today a crazy show like this might be scrutinized by a dozen or more parents per minute and declared to be something that’s simply too wild and not structured enough to teach their kids.

Does anyone remember how we learned back in the day?

Our shows weren’t always structured, we grew up with programs that challenged us and took us to limits we didn’t know about, and some of them were even highly controversial at times, but that was how we learned and what we came to enjoy. Our programs dealt with real world issues and even the educational ones at times seemed a bit out there and kooky in a way that crossed many parents’ eyes, but they were still fun and extremely well-liked. Beakman’s World could be a return to to crazy way we learned, and it could be huge benefit to the kids of today.
