How Peppa Pig Became a Gay Icon on Twitter

Peppa Pig has become something of a gay icon on Twitter. Perhaps you already know who Peppa Pig is or perhaps you’re vaguely familiar with the name but you’re trying to place it and drawing a blank. Before we get too far into the reasons why this character is now considered a gay icon who is absolutely blowing up Twitter, let’s backtrack a bit and find out who Peppa Pig really is to begin with. Peppa Pig is actually a British animated television series aimed at young individuals that has been on for quite some time. It’s all about the title character and the rest of the family, as well as friends from school, all of them a different breed of animal. The show was actually designed to appeal to young children and help them work through different emotions and questions as they grew older and had different experiences in their own lives, both at school and away from it. From the onset, the idea was to provide something that was both entertaining and educational about some of the things that matter most in life. Typically, the subject matter involves things that children won’t learn in school. This show finds a fun and educational way to help children sort out and then deal with their feelings. It also deals with feeling many of the pressures that children are likely to face as they grow up.

Perhaps this is precisely where someone eventually got the idea to turn the title character into a meme that would ultimately represent the LGBTQ+ community. Once that happened, Twitter was taken by storm and before anyone could scarcely eve react, the Peppa Pig gay icon meme was one of the most popular things that had ever circulated through social media. To this day, it’s still generating a great deal of attention. If you follow social media, you probably already know this but if you’re one of those individuals who still doesn’t spend a lot of time on social media platforms of any kind, you might still be wondering about some of the details concerning this particular meme.

So, why is Peppa Pig so iconic within the LGBTQ+ community? As previously mentioned, some of it has to do with the fact that the entire character was ultimately created to help people deal with emotions that traditionally haven’t been considered mainstream. That makes her an almost perfect character for this type of iconic status to begin with. After all, who better to help someone deal with feeling different than Peppa Pig? Apparently, that’s the same thing that another person thought when they decided to create these memes on Twitter. If you haven’t seen them, you really don’t know what you’re missing and it doesn’t matter if you identify as gay, straight or anyting else, you’re likely to get a real kick out of some of the things that come up on social media related to this character.

Sure, she’s a legend in her own right and she is unapologetically herself, something that most of us could learn a great deal about. Right, wrong or indifferent, she doesn’t make excuses or try to become someone else in order to suit the likes of the people that she is around at the time. Peppa Pig is merely herself, in every moment, in all moments. This is something that all of us could learn to do more of and that makes her achieve iconic status almost immediately. If that’s not enough to get your attention, the memes that show up on social media are funny and they’re worth seeing. After all, sometimes all you need is a good laugh.

One thing’s for certain, she has been embraced by the LGBTQ+ community. Almost as soon as the meme hit social media, she was embraced as something of a mascot for the community. Everyone is falling in love with her. Currently, she even has an album available on Spotify. If you think it’s a joke, go ahead and check it out for yourself. You just might be surprised. After all, there are plenty of individuals who are listening to it and it just might become one of your favorites as well.

Apparently, Peppa Pig being a meme on social media isn’t exactly something new. As a matter of fact, she’s been compared to virtually everything at one time or another, with some of the memes being kid-friendly and others being related to her height of more than seven feet, not to mention her supposed need to embark on a career in professional basketball. When you consider this trajectory, it really only stands to reason that she eventually became such an iconic meme for an entire community and for a generation where things are hopefully turning around to be more inclusive of people from all walks of life.

There’s no doubt about the fact that Peppa Pig is immensely popular with people of all ages. No one would ever argue that fact in the first place. Perhaps the more interesting thing is that more recently, this character has become so popular on social media that she has the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Iggy Azalea tweeting about her. That’s probably not something that her creators ever thought would happen when they developed the cartoon so many years ago. In reality, Peppa Pig is no longer merely a cartoon character. She is taking on a much bigger existence and has become something of a legend in her own right, as previously mentioned.

Much of this is because of the power of social media, especially when something really resonates with people like some of the Peppa Pig memes have resonated with the LGBTQ+ community. All it took was a few people to like that first meme and today, there are all kinds of things popping up on social media, most of it spreading at a breakneck pace. Perhaps the most important thing to remember here is that when it’s all said and done, most of it goes back to the origins of the character. It’s all about learning to accept each person for who they are without labels and without prejudice. That’s precisely why Peppa Pig is such an iconic meme today.
