Are people really starving this badly for a spectacle nowadays? A hoverboard explodes into flames in a mall and people whip out their phones and start recording as the thing continues to spark and flame up even as two people are hosing it down with flame retardant. Yes, because that is just the most awesome thing anyone has ever seen, right?
There are times I really weep for the human race.
First of all don’t get the wrong idea about hoverboards even if you’re against them to start with. They’re not programmed to explode while you’re riding them and the majority of them probably won’t burst into flames for absolutely no reason. Usually when this happens there is a solid excuse behind the problem and it normally turns out to be some flaw deep inside the machine that went unaccounted for during construction. But to stand there and just watch it burn seems kind of idiotic really, especially when two people continue douse it with fire suppressors.
The level of retardant in that one little section of the mall could have been fairly hazardous to the health of onlookers and yet they kept standing there, ogling the burning contraption as though there was nothing else in the world going on at that point. It was only when the fire alarm finally went off that people started moving. And honestly, the timing of it was very ridiculous since the issue should have been well-contained at that point. It’s a single hoverboard in the middle of a tile floor and it’s getting doused with chemicals that are designed to smother a fire.
Question though, were the fire suppressors the right kind? There are certain fires that aren’t as easily affected by different fire extinguishers. You would think that people working with this type of machinery would have this kind of thing on hand just in case of an emergency. But of course that might be expecting a lot.
Humanity has been stuck in an era for some time in which doing something doing an emergency means running for your life or standing still and watching. There are exceptions to the rule thankfully, and they come in the form of those that actually spring into action and try to alleviate the situation or, barring that, do whatever they can do. The rubberneckers however are those that just stand and watch without doing anything except stating what should happen and what someone should be doing. It’s appalling really that a person would whip out their phone first and foremost when something like this happens rather than ask a person “how can I help?”.
That’s humanity as of now. A good number of people would gladly just sit there and record something going on rather than helping out if they can. It’s a sad day for humanity when people would rather stand by and watch instead of doing anything, and possibly laugh in the face of a dangerous situation rather than help out another person.
