Hart of Dixie 3.07 Review: “I Run to You”

Dixie

Zoe’s growing concern over Joel and Wade’s friendship took a front seat on this week’s Hart of Dixie. Other relationships, romantic and otherwise, are tested with ultimatums. There was even a surprise pregnancy revealed, which is a first for the show so far!

Annabeth and Lavon‘s relationship is strained this week after Annabeth had given her speech about wanting them to be on the same page. She clearly wants marriage in their future, but she also clearly scared Lavon. He felt like that was an ultimatum, but she didn’t mean it to come off that way, so instead they spend much of this episode avoiding each other. He’s busy training his team for the race, and she’s busy making all kinds of jams. In a sweet resolution to this little fight, he even clears out a cabinet in his kitchen for her to start storing her jams at his house. This was a small but meaningful gesture, and I’m still betting she’ll have a ring on her finger by the end of the season.

Joel is suffering from writers block as a deadline on his second novel approaches, so he’s even encouraging Wade to blow off work to hang out and play video games. Zoe disagrees with this method and stages the Rammer Jammer to resemble NY where Joel successfully wrote his first novel, complete with Tom in full character as a homeless man eyeing his food. When that doesn’t work, he goes back to Wade’s suggestion and takes him up on the offer to stay at his house.

Meanwhile, Wade was nagged earlier by the trio of Truit brothers. Although he was married to their sister Tansy before the series even started, they seem to think that this means they can drink for free in his bar for eternity. Wade puts his foot down and demands they start paying their way, and they end up getting their revenge in the silliest way possible: kidnapping Joel from Wade’s house.

Zoe and Wade keep bickering over their differing views on how best to help Joel out of his slump when Wade gets a text from the brothers with a picture of Joel tied up. It was nice to see Zoe and Wade working together to get him back, and it turns out it’s a pretty easy trade-off: they’ll work their tabs off at the bar by helping Wade collect other people’s tabs. Just before getting Joel back from his captors, Wade is so confident that Zoe still loves him, and once again Zoe scoffs at the idea. It has to be a matter of time before she really starts questioning her own feelings, right?

George and Lynly, among a handful of other townies, are training for a marathon under Lavon’s training against the town’s rival of Fillmore. George is feeling super guilty about hiding his not-yet-official relationship with Lynly from his friend, but still begs for her to keep it a secret from Lavon until after the race at least. As it so happens, Lynly falls off George’s couch and hurts her knee, ensuring she won’t be able to run in the race. She feels equally guilty, and ends up spilling to Lavon. Madder than anything, Lavon gave George an ultimatum to choose between Lynly or the race. Shockingly, George did quit the team because he didn’t want to stop seeing Lynly.

I may not agree with this George/Lynly relationship, but like Tom said when warning Zoe not to be Yoko Ono and “kill” Joel Stevens’ writing career, “fans are the meanest people there are.” I can acknowledge that the writers are trying to make Lynly more likeable, but I still don’t approve of this pairing. We got to see Tansy’s idiot brothers come back, why can’t Tansy herself come back soon? Out of all of George’s relationships, I really thought he was at his best when he was with Tansy last year.

This was probably the first episode all season that didn’t feature a major Lemon storyline. She was just busy trying to find out whose offer outbid hers when she was trying to buy Fancies Restaurant. The selling owner kept dodging Lemon’s questions, so she took it upon herself to snoop around. What she found was a surprise to the viewers, and her father especially. Shelby, Brick’s ex-fiancée whom he broke up with approximately 6 months ago, bought the restaurant and is very pregnant! This will be interesting to see how Brick handles a new baby when he already has 2 grown daughters.

I can’t go another week without mentioning the running gag all season of this captivatingly weird nature show featuring Don Todd, some presumably local guy who dresses in golf gear but in every video he’s out watching and commenting on animals in their natural habitats. His videos are hilarious, and he reminds me of Perd Hapley on Parks and Recreation. I hope it’s not asking for too much to finally see him in Bluebell in person!
