Do you get the feeling this took him a while? I can almost believe this man has been a Star Trek fan for quite some time but I also get this weird image in my head of him attempting this when he was younger, preferably far away from any adults that might have been listening. Don’t get me wrong, it’s kind of impressive save for the fact that you really need to listen in some spots, especially if you’re not that much of a hardcore Trekkie. He’s obviously been at this a while as you can hear the different tunes as he flows from one into the next.
The hard, blaring notes coming from the organ however don’t give a lot of the crisp and much-needed separation between one portion of the music and the next. It’s almost like a literal mashup of sound that keeps moving from one piece into another without the benefit of a break. There’s no doubt that he has skill, and one shouldn’t attempt to call him out on it unless they can match or otherwise top the effort. But through careful and patient observation it is possible to pick out each individual tune as he continually moves from one to another and then to another. In some ways it almost sounds as though he is simply mashing them all up into one super-long song that has no need of a break.
It’s something a diehard Trekkie would no doubt recognize in a heartbeat and would be able to follow without fail. The time it must have taken to get every note right had to have been extensive, not to mention it must have required a lot of patience. It’s impressive really, but once again it’s almost too much. Really, truly, honestly, being brutally honest even, it is a rather clunky sound on an organ largely because the notes are so full and, for lack of a better word, stuffed. Trekkies can rant and rail at me all day if they like, but’s the attempt is, to me, rather forced as each note is being forcefully shoved from the organ in a manner that seems almost too aggressive for words to fully explain.
That is a matter of opinion however. The effect it produces is still quite obvious and still very impressive. As it was said above, unless one can match it they shouldn’t call out the performer for anything but the sheer skill that they possess and the obvious patience that it would take to produce such a sound. Somehow I doubt that it would win any real applause at a church service, but at a convention there would no doubt be a great many hands clapping for the sincere effort.
Keep in mind if those listening are’t Trekkies and don’t fully appreciate the sound of an organ being played in such fashion that there might be even harsher criticisms to be endured. On this site however it usually pays to be somewhat fair and objective. So with that said, this is a rather stunning effect and does speak of the musician’s skill and determination. It’s not bad really.
