Well, well, well.
Though we all knew that Netflix is killing it in subscriber numbers, but what we didn’t realize is just how well they’re doing. In a report published yesterday by CordCutting.com, it turns out that Netflix isn’t just beating out the top 3 cable companies individually in U.S. subscribers, they’re beating them in total subscribers combined. While that’s incredibly interesting on its own, keep in mind that cable companies (including the top 3 — Comcast, Charter, and Cox) tend to have boosted numbers because of their very flagrant attempts at monopolizing the industry.
In addition to surpassing the combined efforts of its cable company competition, Netflix is also beating out AT&T (through its combined U-verse and DirecTV offerings) by a whopping 83%. It’s crazy thinking how things have changed and trends have been altered in just the past few years, and it’s clear that this is only going to change even more as time goes on. Cable is digging its own grave, and it’s important that they make changes if they want any chance at survival. Even if it isn’t Netflix that wins out, it becomes clearer with each passing year that streaming services and cord-cutting are the way of the future.
And these numbers don’t even take into account overseas subscribers! While these cable companies don’t get a boost from foreign markets, Netflix boasts an additional 36 million subscribers in overseas markets. In the words of Bob Dylan, “the times, they are a-changin’.”
